• Group Assignment for Mega Project
• To Know the Multiple Aspects of Project
• There is a Chinese proverb,
“To Get Rich, One Must Build Roads”.
• Project Started for economic progress and
Security.

• It is trade route between east and west from
beginning of 2nd century
• This name suggested by German geographer
• It is also source for culture exchanges.
• The length of route is 4000 miles
• Arab Trader increased the trade with china
6. INTRODUCTION OF KARAKORUM
HIGHWAY
• The Karakorum highway was started in 1959 and was
completed in 1979 (open to the public since 1986 )
• Length 1,300 km (Pakistan 887 km ) China 413 km
• It connects China's Xinjiang region with Pakistan's
Gilgit–Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa regions
• Major cities Hasanabdal, Abbottabad, Thakot, Chilas,
Gilgit, Aliabad, Khunjerab Pass, Kashgar

Gilgit Baltistan the Strategic Importance:
• Gilgit Baltistan linked with the rich region of
China Xinjiang to Beijing east and Gilgit
Baltistan to Afghanistan west.
China as Post Modern Colonial Power:
• China Build the “Friendship Highway”
• China establish naval bases on the warm
water has brought global trade.

Pakistan linked China Western Region:
• Karakorum Highway called Strategic
Investment.
• Provides the safe and short link to western
and Arabian Sea.

Project type:
Renovation, Maintenance, Restructuring and New
construction.
Funding and construction:
• Funding was provided by ministry of
communication.
• The highway was constructed by the Frontier
Works Organization it was established in 1966.

Phases:
1.Stones in 1971 and war start result losses lives.
2. Converting the Road into highway Specifications
completed in 1978.

• It is also called Championship Highway.
• Assets Supervision and Administration
Commission (SASAC) commission report.
• The width of the road will be extended from 10 to
30 meters.
• It will result increase in 3 times capacity.

• In 1979 New York Times Magazine wrote it
took 20 years and life of one work per mile.
16. CONCLUSION
• Silk route, now called Karakorum highway is
one of the mega projects of the world. It was a
big decision taking the future under
consideration with high goals and objectives.
This project was completed at the cost of
hundreds of lives. Now it facilitates Pakistan
and China with trade and also assists that
specific area with economic benefits.
Expansion and repair are now ongoing.
