1. Literacy and Numeracy week 2010By 3B and Miss den ElzenAfter reading ‘One-eighth of a muffin...’, 3B wrote their own story.
2. What did we focus on?Reading: We read the original story together first, continually re-read our own work, and read a line for the recording.Writing: We wrote our own story and needed to think about the events and rhymes.Speaking and Listening: We thought about our expression and projection when we recorded our lines. We tried to listen to each others ideas when writing the story- but it was tricky!Mathematics: FRACTIONS! We had been learning about fractions but this was difficult because our whole was 2 muffins.
3. There once was a greedy little boy name Sam,who was given two muffins and a slice of ham.
4. One day he invited a friend to stay,so Zac came over the very next day.Sam shared his muffins with great despair, for now he had only one muffin, he had to share.
5. Sam was a lucky boy and invited two more, two little girls who were extremely poor.Ella and Abbey came to the house, they were so shy, as quiet as a mouse.
6. One half of a muffin each friend received, their eyes were gleaming, they were so pleased. But Ella was really very very clever,She knew they could keep dividing the muffin forever.
7. The four young children invited another friend each, then suddenly Zac began to screech. “But then we have to cut our pieces in half”,the seven friends smiled at each other and began to laugh.
8. So they sat happily at the table drinking some water, they looked at their muffin part, they each had one quarter. “Now we have 8 pieces and plenty to share, let’s invite more friends and show that we care.”
9. They doubled the number of friends at the table,16 children now- it sounds like a fable. 16 friends- and that was enough,Dividing the muffin was becoming tough!
10. What lesson did they learn about sharing with friends?Fractions are easy- but they never end!
11. Dividing a muffin is easy you see,but what fraction did they each get to eat with their tea?
