1. How does your media product represent particular social groups? Martin Kearl & George Attwill

2. Social Groups within the film #1 Our film contained characters which at the most basic all fell into the same social group, they are all 17 year old teenagers. This immediately gives negative connotations about the characters as stereotypically teenagers are seen as violent, rude and are often portrayed quite negatively (the term “hoodie” has become synonymous with this negative, and incorrect portrayal of teenagers). We decided to use these stereotypes however in our film to help portray characters with conventional behavioural traits, which through the use of stereotypes we could easily convey to the audience. We also tried to break stereotypes by offering characters who did not conform to specific social stereotypes.

3. Social Groups within the film #2 Our film focuses on a very specific social group British teenagers around the age of 17, more specifically from the south This is quite a small social group (in context with nationwide etc...) though this did limit the amount of characterization, it gave the film a very grounded feel and also in kept with our brief which was to create a “regional” British independent film. As we live in southern England it made sense to set it here as we were able to give an in depth and accurate rendition of the setting for the film. Also to keep in mind was that our target audience was the same as the characters so they had to be believable as the audience would then be able to easily engage with the characters

4. Social Groups within the film #3 By using our knowledge of how specific character traits are portrayed through techniques such as camera angles, and editing and also through the mise-en-scene we were able to tailor the genre defined conventions we chose to use in order to portray our characters particular social groups. For the Antogonist character for example we merged common conventions for thriller films to create a character with threatening connotations, Whereas where we wanted a more positive representation or our teenage social group the techniques would lean more towards those seen conventionally in independent British films.
