The issuance of the DD Form 2586 Verification of Military Experience and Training (VMET) document is sponsored
by the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness, in cooperation with the military
services. The VMET document is an "all-services" integrated form which displays demographic, training, and
experience information that is retrieved from various automated sources.
The VMET document lists your military experience and training which may have application to employment in the
private sector. Use the document as a tool to prepare resumes and job applications, in concert with evaluation
reports, training certificates, awards, transcripts, and other pertinent documents. It is not an official transcript for
purposes of granting college credit, but it can be used to support your having met training and/or course
requirements to qualify for civilian occupations, certificates, licenses, or programs of study. Credit recommendations
from the American Council of Education (ACE) for occupations and/or courses are listed when they are available;
academic institutions determine which credits are applicable to a program of study.
All data available in the VMET database maintained by the Defense Manpower Data Center (DMDC) is provided as
of the 'Date of Information' (Item 7 on the VMET document). For more information on how the VMET document is
created, please see the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on the VMET web site
(https://www.dmdc.osd.mil/vmet). The VMET web site also has a list of links to additional web sites that can assist
you in your job search process.
SERVICE-SPECIFIC INFORMATION
Occupation descriptions reflected on the VMET document are from MCO P1200.7 or from the American Council on
Education (ACE), and they are generic descriptions rather than actual duties that an individual performed. The
VMET document includes only those Marine Corps Institute (MCI) courses that have been completed in the Marine
Corps Total Force System (MCTFS).
The Sailor/Marine American Council on Education Registry Transcript (SMART) document is available at no cost to
you. This is an official college transcript, with recommended credits for your military experience and training. The
SMART transcript can be obtained from your Education/Navy College Office. Also, unofficial copies can be
downloaded from the Navy College website (http://www.navycollege.navy.mil).
Receipt of this document marks one of the first steps in your Transition. Begin now, plan and take action for a
successful transition. Make an appointment at your Career Resource Management Center (CRMC) for pre-
separation counseling, scheduling attendance at the Transition Assistance Program (TAP) seminar and to use the
CRMC resource library including the automated employment databases. In addition, inquire about other transition
and veterans benefits/services.
Visit your Education Office if you desire interest inventories or education counseling, want to take certification tests
or entrance exams, need advice on post-service education or training, including teaching as a second career and to
get a copy of your SMART Transcript.
The USMC Transition staff wishes you great success in your transition to civilian life.
