The document discusses evaluating skid resistance on national roads in the Podlaskie province of Poland. Skid resistance is the ability of a road surface to resist the relative motion between the tire and pavement, which is important for safety. It is characterized by the coefficient of friction and is crucial when roads are wet, as it affects braking distances and vehicle stability when turning. Many dangerous areas on roads with high traffic, such as roundabouts and pedestrian crossings, are at risk of skidding. The thesis will study and evaluate the properties of skid resistance on selected national roads in the province from 2008 to 2013 using an SRT-3 device to measure the coefficient of friction in wet conditions during braking.

Evaluation of skid resistance on the national roads in the podlaskie province.
Summary
Road pavements should provide a comfortable and safe ride for all road users. The
skid resistance of road pavement is very important for safety traffic. They are defined as the
ability to produce force that resists the relative motion between a vehicle tire and a road
pavement. The parameter which characterized the skid resistance is non – dimensional
coefficient of friction. Mainly, skid resistance is crucial on the wet pavement. From its
characteristic depends braking distance and maintain stability of the vehicle on a curve. There
is a lot of dangerous places on roads, specially with high traffic density, exposed to the skid
risk, as for instance approaches to and across roundabouts, traffic signals, pedestrian crossing
and steep gradients. Often in these locations, using the improved road signs and markings,
improved street lighting or standard surface dressing is not effective in withstanding the
breaking forces.
Value of the friction coefficient depends on specially from technical and operating
condition of a road pavements, tire’s characteristic and vehicle’s speed. Coefficient of friction
is closely related with the occurrence of three zones on the tire/pavement plane (the
phenomenon of aquaplaning). Areas of these zones depend on the texture of road surface –
mainly microtexture and macrotexture. Microtexture is evaluated indirectly by friction
coefficient measurements, while the macrotexture is determined using the surface analyser or
applying the volumetric method. IN this thesis there are also methods of friction coefficient
measurement in real conditions and its parameters of evaluation in Europe presented. The
polish SRT-3 devices represent the third generation of skid resistance testers introduced by
the Road and Bridge Research Institute. The SRT-3 tests this parameter in the extreme
condition of measurements wheel braking process – at 100% slip on the wet surface.
The subject of this thesis is to study and evaluate properties of skid resistance at
selected national roads in the Podlaskie province. The paper presents an analysis of results
(from 2008 to 2013) of an investigation of the coefficient of friction of the pavement. The
measurements of this parameter have been carried out on the roads sections by the SRT-3
device.
