Transmitter In A Drone
The Importance of COFDM Transmission
The expanded form of COFDM is Coded
Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing.
COFDM is a scheme of modulation that is used to
divide one digital signal across a thousand or
even more signal carriers simultaneously. All
these signals are sent at 90 degrees to each
other so that these do not interfere with one
another. COFDM transmission is mainly used in
Europe and therefore a COFDM transmitter-
receiver is relevant in that continent. COFDM is
also supported by the pertinent standards of
broadcasting (Digital Video Broadcasting) in the
US.
2. Application of COFDM in Drones
The reason why Europe decided upon using
COFDM transmission is that this form of
transmission can overcome the effects of
multipath. A normal signal transmission
encounters numerous obstacles.
These obstacles can be buildings and even
people and they result in scattering the signal
into multiple paths. When these multiple signals
reach the TV, the scattered elements of the
signal often cause what is known as ghost
images. COFDM resists multipath effects since it
transmits the same signal using multiple carriers.
The effect is that of the signal flowing around the
obstacle thereby making this transmission very
effective. There are premier providers of drones
for government applications with an emphasis on
public safety missions to include Search and
Rescue, Crime Scene Surveys and tactical
response surveillance. The payload options
include diverse thermal IR cameras, live video
downlinks, encrypted data-links and wireless
mesh besides long range COFDM transmitter-
receiver systems.
3. Long Range Transmission
Today drones offer high grade wireless video
systems that are built with the needs of law
enforcement agencies in mind. These systems
give the officers of law enforcement agencies the
tactically superior range and non-line-of-sight
performance that is necessary in today’s
missions. The technology offered therefore
includes legacy analog, COFDM transmitter-
receiver and Agile Mesh brand systems. The
COFDM transmitters and receivers are well suited
for UAV as well as mobile cameras, vehicles and
broadcast cameras besides the use of the
military and the police. The transmitters and
receivers are custom- made adaptable to
different applications. Some of the transmitters
are the size of a credit card with a thickness of
about 1” and they weigh less than 170gm. This
increases their application for the UAV or drone
that needs a video downlink system that is very
light in weight and small in size. Technology
permits the use of a number of these COFDM
transmitters and receivers in the same area.
