Expectations of
music magazine
genres.
• Common dress – most rap/hip-hop magazines contain street wear such as
baseball caps, tracksuits and jerseys. They also have a lot of bling and
expensive clothing which the makes the artist look rich and powerful. A lot of
the artists also have a lot of tattoos, gold teeth etc. which make them look
hard rich and in a sense higher status.
• Speech – most speech in rap/hip-hop magazines is music related but can also
contain slang and fraises from their songs. There's a lot of articles into the life
of well known rap/hip-hop artist which entice the customer to read it.
• Colour – most rap/hhip-hop magazines conain dark colours like blacks and
greys. There is also a lot of red used in the font and background.
• Font – the fonts used in the magazines are very bold and mainly in the
colours black, white and red. The fonts are quite large which make it
accessible to read to most an can be read at a glance, which will also catch
the customers eye.
•Common dress – in pop magazines it is expected that there are good looking boys in
well known brands and girls in skimpy clothing. Often wearing pink girlie clothing which
appeal and are trending with 8-15 year olds.
•Speech – in pop magazines it s often found the language relates to young teenage
girls (the target market), including abbreviations that are used on social networking a
texts for example ‘tbh’ , ‘omg’ and ‘awks’ which is relevant to them. There is also
gossip, Celeb’s and fashion included inside.
•Colours – mainly pinks and purples are used which is stereotypically appealing to the
target market. There are also lots of bright neon colours which stand out and relate to
the artists pop videos and songs.
•Font – the font varies there's bold italic which make it seem like shouting and there's
curly girly writing which will appeal to the young target market.
•common dress – the common dress in rock magazines is dark clothing, but sill quite
revealing as I think its targeted at an older audience then pop for example. A lot of
dark make up even on men and hair dyed black. Minimal jewellery and ‘bling’ unlike
the rap magazines.
•Speech – minimal writing but big headings. References to bands such as Artic
Monkeys which will relate to the target market. Also there is abbreviations like in the
pop magazine but with more adult content for example ‘wtf’ which includes swear
words. There is also a lot of explanation marks which gives a sense of shouting.
•Colours – very dark colour schemes greys and blacks with a few bits of white and
red to not look too doom and gloom. There is also a few bright colours such as
yellow which contrasts with the colour scheme and make it more easy to read.
•Fonts – bold capital letters used through out which looks eye catching and hard
.Mainly sticking to plain fonts but sometimes using font that looks smashed up and
shattered for example the Kerrang title which gives a sense of the culture of the
music being portrayed.
• Common dress – raving / clubbing clothes. Casual t-shirts and dj wear such as
headphones etc. sunglasses and similar accessories.
• Speech – dance/ rave related text such as ‘return to rave’ which will attract the
reader if they enjoy this genre. Mentions a lot of famous djs that the target
market will enjoy reading about.
• Colour – mainly and dark background with techno bright neon lights and text
which gives the vibe of being in a club/rave, which Is where this music is played
and will be familiar for the target market.
• Font- bright fonts, quite bold and eye catching and stand out from the
background which makes it very accessible to passing costumers.
• Common dress - suit and tie with sometimes props such as saxophones as they're
re commonly associated with jazz music. They seem to be mainly smiling and male
even though I think the magazine is aimed at both genders.
• Speech – famous jazz musicians and stories about them, could also feature their
upcoming events. Also talk about there instruments and the music. Also the word
‘jazz’ itself is used a lot for example the title of all three magazine examples.
• Colour – mainly black and white images with splash of colour in the text to stand
out and make it more legible from a far.
• Font – big titles that are easy to read and stand out from the background, small
fonts on the side to not give too much away before you read the magazine.
