Walton County’s
Media Center
Mission Statement
The media specialists in Walton
County will provide to the students of
WCPS access to all forms of
information both in print and
electronically, thus providing the
students with the necessary
information and materials to meet
the academic goals of the school
system. In addition to resources,
students will be provided with
instruction and guidance in
acquisition and utilization of these
materials.
WCPS Media Center Goals
• To provide services and materials in adequate
quantity and quality to meet the curriculum
standards of both the local and state BOE.
• To select media specialists who are
knowledgeable in both the utilization of the
materials and the methods.
• To encourage the media staff to become an
active part of the instructional team by
collaborating with the classroom teachers to
provide the media skills necessary for and
related to the instructional program.
• To continually evaluate the media program and
collection.
• To continually evaluate the media program in
terms of current technology trends.
• To provide age appropriate materials for
students to develop critical reading and thinking
skills.
• To provide materials which will help students
develop a greater appreciation for literature
• To aid students in acquiring skills for accessing
information and using the information across the
curriculum.
Walton County Media
Center Policies and
Procedures
• The media center is a resource for
EVERYONE! With flexible scheduling,
students have daily access to the
media center any time during
operational hours.
• The media center staff is available
to collaborate with teachers to
provide students with access to a
broad spectrum of information in
various formats. Collaborative
efforts are essential to provide
students with information that is
applicable to achieving classroom
objectives and to teach them how to
critically evaluate sources of
information.
Accessibility
• It is the responsibility of the media committee to respond through established
procedures to formal complaints regarding challenged materials. When
objections are raised to instructional materials used in the system's
educational program, the complainant and the school system must adhere to
the reconsideration procedures outlined below.
• School Level - (First Step)
• If there is a complaint about instructional materials, the complainant should
have a conference with the local school principal. The purposes of this
conference are to discuss the complaint and to inform the complainant of the
procedures for filing a request for review of the material. If the complainant
intends to proceed with the process, he/she will be given the "Request for
Reconsideration of Instructional Materials and Media" form to complete.
• When the completed form is returned to the principal, copies of the form will
be filed with the principal's office, with the Coordinator of Media Services,
and with the Assistant Superintendent of Instruction.
• The School Media Committee will be informed of the request and members
will read/review the material in question in its entirety. The committee will
meet to discuss the request and make a decision as to what action will be
taken. Minutes of the meeting will be recorded and kept on file in the
principal's office. When a vote is taken to determine the decision of the
committee, the results should be a part of the minutes. The vote will be taken
by secret ballot. The ballots should be kept on file with the minutes. The
decision of the committee will be made within twenty (20) working days from
the date of the formal written request.
• A letter stating the decision and its rationale will be written by the
chairperson of the School Media Committee and mailed to the complainant
within five (5) working days of the decision. Copies of the letter and minutes
of the meeting will be kept on file in the principal's office and the office of the
Coordinator of Media Services.
Reconsideration of Materials
• The most important prerequisite for someone to receive an
Internet account is that he or she take full responsibility for
his or her own actions. The Walton County Public Schools
will not be liable for the actions of anyone connecting to the
Internet through this hook-up. All users shall assume full
liability--legal, financial, or otherwise--for their actions.
• In addition, the Walton County Public Schools takes no
responsibility for any information or materials that are
transferred through the Internet.
• Because of the size of the Internet, many kinds of materials
eventually find their way onto the system. Should a user
happen to find materials that may be deemed inappropriate
while using his or her Walton County Public Schools Internet
account, he or she shall refrain from downloading this
material and shall not identify or share the location of this
material. Be aware that the transfer of certain kinds of
materials is illegal and punishable by fine or jail sentence.
• The primary purpose of the Internet connection in Walton
County schools is education. It is essential that everyone
who uses this connection understand that purpose. Failure
to abide by these regulations shall result in suspension of
the Internet account.
Internet Use/ Safety
• A good collection development plan must include weeding.
The process of weeding is a key part of assessing the
collection. It helps keep collections relevant, accurate, and
useful; and it facilitates more effective use of space in the
library media center.
• Library media materials should be weeded if they:
• Are in poor physical condition
• Have not been circulated in the last five years
• Are outdated in content, use, or accuracy (Copyright date
should be considered; however, do not make a decision to
weed based solely on the copyright date of the material.
Some older material may be considered classic or may be of
great historical value to your collection.)
• Are mediocre or poor in quality
• Are biased or portray stereotypes
• Are inappropriate in reading level
• Duplicate information which is no longer in heavy demand
• Are superseded by new or revised information
• Are outdated and unattractive in format, design, graphics,
and illustrations
• Contain information which is inaccessible because they lack
a table of contents, adequate indexing, and/or search
capabilities
• Are not selected in accordance with general selection
criteria

good book.
Teachers
• The media center can
hold at least two
classes: one for the
media center and one
for the computers.
• There is plenty of work
space to spread out the
students so that they
are not on top on one
another.
• Weeding of old,
outdated books.
• The work room with
the various
technological tools is
essential to every
teacher.
• The Media Specialist

Accessibility
  • 6. • It is the responsibility of the media committee to respond through established procedures to formal complaints regarding challenged materials. When objections are raised to instructional materials used in the system's educational program, the complainant and the school system must adhere to the reconsideration procedures outlined below. • School Level - (First Step) • If there is a complaint about instructional materials, the complainant should have a conference with the local school principal. The purposes of this conference are to discuss the complaint and to inform the complainant of the procedures for filing a request for review of the material. If the complainant intends to proceed with the process, he/she will be given the "Request for Reconsideration of Instructional Materials and Media" form to complete. • When the completed form is returned to the principal, copies of the form will be filed with the principal's office, with the Coordinator of Media Services, and with the Assistant Superintendent of Instruction. • The School Media Committee will be informed of the request and members will read/review the material in question in its entirety. The committee will meet to discuss the request and make a decision as to what action will be taken. Minutes of the meeting will be recorded and kept on file in the principal's office. When a vote is taken to determine the decision of the committee, the results should be a part of the minutes. The vote will be taken by secret ballot. The ballots should be kept on file with the minutes. The decision of the committee will be made within twenty (20) working days from the date of the formal written request. • A letter stating the decision and its rationale will be written by the chairperson of the School Media Committee and mailed to the complainant within five (5) working days of the decision. Copies of the letter and minutes of the meeting will be kept on file in the principal's office and the office of the Coordinator of Media Services. Reconsideration of Materials
  • 7. • The most important prerequisite for someone to receive an Internet account is that he or she take full responsibility for his or her own actions. All users shall assume full liability--legal, financial, or otherwise--for their actions. • In addition, the Walton County Public Schools takes no responsibility for any information or materials that are transferred through the Internet. • Because of the size of the Internet, many kinds of materials eventually find their way onto the system. Be aware that the transfer of certain kinds of materials is illegal and punishable by fine or jail sentence. • The primary purpose of the Internet connection in Walton County schools is education. It is essential that everyone who uses this connection understand that purpose. Failure to abide by these regulations shall result in suspension of the Internet account. Internet Use/ Safety
  • 8. • A good collection development plan must include weeding. The process of weeding is a key part of assessing the collection. It helps keep collections relevant, accurate, and useful; and it facilitates more effective use of space in the library media center. • Library media materials should be weeded if they: • Are in poor physical condition • Have not been circulated in the last five years • Are outdated in content, use, or accuracy (Copyright date should be considered; however, do not make a decision to weed based solely on the copyright date of the material. Some older material may be considered classic or may be of great historical value to your collection.) • Are mediocre or poor in quality • Are biased or portray stereotypes • Are inappropriate in reading level • Duplicate information which is no longer in heavy demand • Are superseded by new or revised information • Are outdated and unattractive in format, design, graphics, and illustrations • Contain information which is inaccessible because they lack a table of contents, adequate indexing, and/or search capabilities • Are not selected in accordance with general selection criteria Collection & Weeding
