Mobile phone subscriptions reached 5 billion in 2010, with half of the world owning a mobile phone. New technologies have enabled lower-income groups and political protest movements in developing countries to connect and organize and document human rights abuses. Some examples discussed are the use of SMS codes for election verification in Mexico, citizen reporting of government projects and budgets via SMS in Kenya, and how mobile phones helped empower and connect political protesters in Thailand.
