In the battle of the transport giants airlines consistently come out on top, outperforming railways in booking, cost and convenience. For many people going on holiday has become synonymous with taking a flight. But when it comes to sustainability, trains are blazing a trail, emitting just a fraction of the carbon of a flight. The reach, speed and frequency of high-speed rail in Europe is impressive, so why are we all still flying?
