The colour
“While it has the strength to
stand alone, teal also works
with a variety of colours to
produce unique results,” says
Marc Shotland, group PR and
marketing executive at Home Fabrics.
The look
“When mixed with jewel-like colours, teal
gives an opulent look,” says Marc. “Here,
we layered a sofa with teal, turquoise, grey
and navy velvet scatters, while a single
floral cushion makes the scheme pop. The
embossed indigo wallcovering is a strong
focal point, but instead of toning it down, we
added lime, aubergine and chevron drapes to
create a theatrical look,” says Marc.
Where to use it
“It works in any space from a fun playroom
to a formal lounge. Depending on how the
colour is used, it can either be traditional or
funky and quirky,” he notes.
Also pair it with
Teal is a great feature colour in a neutral
room, says Marc. “Mixing it with whites
and beiges brings another dimension to an
otherwise ordinary scheme.”

The colour
“With its red-brown roots
and burnished undertones,
Marsala, Pantone’s 2015
colour of the year, can
represent raw nature or
glamour and luxury,
depending on how you use
it,” says Gabrielle Dyer,
marketing coordinator at
St Leger and Viney.
The look
In this reading nook, marsala enhances the
chocolate brown tone of a vintage studded
armchair. “We kept things casual by mixing
a scatter covered in English country plaid
and a lambskin throw. A safari-style table,
copper anglepoise floorlamp and a textured
rug round off the look,” says Gabrielle.
Where to use it
“Use in a bedroom or a living room, either
as a pop of rich colour or to make a bold
statement,” recommends Gabrielle.
Also pair it with
“Pair it with shades of burnt orange or
copper blush (Dulux colour of the year).
Use light cream or green to create contrast,”
suggests Gabrielle.

The colour
“While yellow is very
trendy, it can be too
bright for some rooms.
Instead, mix honey-
coloured accessories
with neutral shades and
pattern to create a rich,
layered look,” says Katrin
Herrmann-Van Dyk,
sales director at Hertex.
The look
Honey blends beautifully with the textures
and colours in this living room. “Playful
patterns found in the scatter cushions and
wall treatments lend a modern feel, while
hints of white keep it looking fresh. A
sisal rug subtly complements the palette,”
says Katrin.
Where to use it
“Rather than decorating an entire space
with honey, introduce it gently by painting
a feature wall or adding small decor
accents,” Katrin suggests.
Also pair it with
“Introduce honey to a neutral, grey room
for timeless appeal. Mix with navy for a
more formal look, with white for a crisp
combo or with lime for a casual setting,”
says Katrin.
