In a paper just published in Science, scientists from Rockefeller University in New York City show that humans can discriminate more than 1 trillion olfactory stimuli. It was previously thought that we could detect 10,000 odors.

Julio Licinio, MD, FRANZCP, is Deputy Director, Translational Medicine and Head, Mind
and Brain Theme at the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute and
Strategic Professor of Psychiatry, Flinders University. He is also Research Professor at
University of Southern California, Los Angeles. He was previously Director, John Curtin
School of Medical Research, ANU, and head of the Translational Medicine Department.
