3. Greetings Friends of Ohio State Theatre,
The lifeblood of theatre is new works—and this season
focuses on numerous premieres. From our original
plays by our undergraduates in our Lab Series this fall
to our spring solo works festival by our MFA actors, we
insist on providing opportunities for our students to
forge pathways for creative, collective collaboration.
Such collaborations extend beyond national borders
as we present an American premiere of Emma Dante’s
Operetta Burlesque following its celebrated opening this
past summer in Italy. We follow this with three autumn
semester productions: the first is our new concept ‘raw
theatre’ production of The Norwegians in Mount Hall
Studio, our co-production with the School of Music of
the Tony Award jazz musical City of Angels, and our MFA
actors in a new piece inspired by their work with children
on the autism spectrum. In the spring we collaborate with
guest artist Melissa Maxwell who directs Alice Childress’
Trouble in Mind. We celebrate the work of our video
and visual media students with our annual film/video
showcase. Our relationship with Columbus-area schools
continues with our Shakespeare school tour of Henry V.
This is our sixth year in our partnership with the Royal
Shakespeare Company and we celebrate this with our
Shakespeare and Education Festival in May 2015.
Theatre is the ultimate interactive art form. And that
interaction involves you – the audience. We appreciate
all of you who supported our seasons past and hope

A striptease of the soul, Operetta Burlesque is the newest work by
Compagnia Sud Costa Occidentale, an award-winning Italian troupe led
by Emma Dante. Marking the company’s debut in an English-speaking country, this
physical theatre production tells the story of Pietro, a young man from a village
near Naples who identifies as a woman. His passionate soul is trapped in his ill-
fitting body and in a provincial town that is not big enough for him. Pietro unhappily
falls in love numerous times until, at age 40, he meets the love of his life. The play
is a tale of gender identity and family relationships, depicting the struggles of the
many Pietros of southern Italy and beyond.
This work is the centerpiece of the symposium; “Blurring Boundaries without
Burning Bridges:” Italian Contemporary Performance, the Theatre of Emma
Dante and Beyond.

The actors of the Department of Theatre’s Master of Fine Arts in Acting program
create a new devised work based on their experiences working with the Hunter
Heartbeat Method. This method uses Shakespeare to reach children on the
autism spectrum. This ground-breaking work is part of a a study conducted by
the Nisonger Center examining the therapeutic benefits of Shakespeare for these
children. Scientists and actors combine forces to explore this work from their
unique perspectives and shared experience.

An homage to 1940s film noir, the Tony award-winning jazz musical City of Angels
weaves together the stories of Stine, a writer struggling to adapt his detective
novel as a screenplay, and Stone, his protagonist, a hard-boiled private eye.
As Stine is forced to compromise his artistic vision for the sake of Hollywood
success, Stone gets steamed at his author’s lack of artistic integrity. The line
between reality and fiction blurs as the creator comes face to face with his
creation, and ultimately, himself.

“PAY BY PLATE” PARKING
During performances you may park in the designated lots indicated on the map. CampusParc
has parking pay machines in several campus parking lots. Unless you have an OSU parking
permit, parking is $1.50 an hour or a $6.25 flat fee Monday - Friday 6pm - 12am, Saturday and
Sunday 12am - 12am, for theatre events. When you purchase time from the machine, you will
need to enter your license plate number and your vehicle will be registered in their system for
the time purchased. You will no longer need to display a receipt on your dash. The machines
accept coins and credit/debit cards for payment. Check our website for show runtimes,
which are added two days before the show opens. If you have questions regarding parking
accommodations, please contact the Ohio State Theatre Box Office at (614) 292-2295 or visit
campusparc.com.
Thurber Theatre, Roy Bowen Theatre, and the New Works Lab: The closest parking location
isthe lot directly across the street from Drake Performance and Event Center, but this fills up early
and should be avoided after 7:00 pm. The next best location is north of Morrill Tower (adjacent to
Ohio Stadium).
Mount Hall Studio Theatre: Follow the direction signs to the lot south of Carmack Road and walk
back to Mount Hall.

On Broadway in 1957, an integrated theatre company begins
rehearsals on a topical drama dealing with controversial current
events, which they hope will be Broadway’s next big hit. When
prejudices and stereotypes emerge in the company, talented
African-American actress Wiletta Mayer faces a difficult choice: the
opportunity to achieve her lifelong dream of playing a leading role
on Broadway or compromising her principles. Trouble in Mind, a
backstage satire of egos and attitudes, is an insightful look at who
we are and who we want to be.

Celebrate the six years of the Ohio State / Royal Shakespeare Company
( RSC ) partnership with a weekend of workshops, performances, and
presentations. In addition to featuring Columbus area K-12 students
who have benefitted from implementing the Royal Shakespeare
Company’s artistic practice in the classroom, the festival will present
the research findings from the Department of Teaching and Learning
and from the Shakespeare and Autism Project, a longitudinal study
conducted by Ohio State’s Nisonger Center (Wexner Medical Center)
and the Department of Theatre.

As the final project for our three-year Master of Fine Arts in Acting
program, each of the nine students will share their artistry with an original
