A presentation on using a sidewalk art competition as a way to enhance the image of #Nanaimo BC Comparing the street art project to the successful Parksville Sandcastle festival.
2. Objectives
Enhance the image of Nanaimo as a fun, interesting place to live, work, play

3. Background
Nanaimo has been a working city of Coal, distribution and forestry
As those traditional industries have died or slowed Nanaimo is transitioning to an attractive place to live
and work with a beautiful harbour and waterfront walkway
It does not however have any specific image

4. Prior Examples
We have examples nearby of towns acquiring an image to consider
Parksville with it’s sandcastle Festival

5. Parksville has created a wonderful annual event
Click here to see photos of the 2013 event
http://www.parksvillebeachfest.ca/cms.asp?wpID=17
Attendance has grown from 100 in 1982 to 100,000 in recent years
Hotels, restaurants, and many other businesses have experienced a major upswing in business

6. Artus-Pocus
We are organizing a “street art” or “chalk art” competition as part of the “Culture Days” event
from Sept. 27 – 29, 2013
The concept is to solicite teams to create works of art in chalk on the road, sidewalk or buildings
which are a “trompe l’oeil” ; That is an illusion – hence the proposed name

7. Street Art
Street Art or Chalk Art is a fun, creative, interactive process whereby “artists” plan and execute
(large) scale murals or tableaus in public spaces; streets, sidewalks, building walls, etc
The idea is to create a “trompe l’oeil” i.e. to “trick the eye” into thinking there is some real
(impossible) scene in front of the viewer
◦ A canyon in the middle of the street
◦ A waterfall
◦ A gnome sweeping leaves under the sidewalk
See examples following

12. Proposal
I propose to organize a regional contest similar to the Parksville sandcastle competition or the
Dragon Boat Festival
Competitors would deposit $100 (or scaled) to reserve a plot to do art on the street
A parallel free street art section with chalk would provide a small (6ft-4ft) piece of sidewalk for
Nanaimo youth to draw on – fun, judged? Prizes?
One or more large regional sponsor would be secured to provide prizes and chalk

13. Fun Drawing
In addition to the competition people
of all ages will be able have their own
4 ft. x 6 ft. space to do a drawing

14. DNBIA Link
I am asking the DNBIA for support in the form of agreement to close off Commercial or the
waterfront walkway?? To provide space to create the art
Whatever street(s) are chosen, we would approach the city for permits
This would be part of the “Culture Days” event on Sept 27-29 and would be promoted along
with all Culture Days events but would use Social Media to reach the broader regional audience.

15. Wall Examples
Imagine you could get
an arresting image like
the one to the right on
the old Sam the Record
Man building on the
main road- that would
get visiting drivers
attention
