English
Writing and Presenting: Advertising for Grade ten.
An authentic learning task.
 This task is interdisciplinary as it can be used for
various aspects in teaching English. For example it
can help with analyzing advertisement, developing
advertisements which can then also be linked to
the language aspect of English. Focusing on the
correct use of words and spelling.
 This task can also be linked to business studies as
it requires the students to design a product and
advertise this product.
 Be able to identify important aspects of an
advertisement. Example: Language usage.
 Use the AIDA principle to analyse an
advertisement.
 Create an unique real life product for a specific
audience.
 Create an advertisement using the AIDA principle.
 Use this principle and techniques learned in the
future.
 Collaborate on a task.
 1) Real- world (relevant)
 2) Ill -defined students (students need to make sense)
 3) Complex tasks done over time
 4) Examine tasks from different perspectives
 5) Opportunities to collaborate
 6) Opportunity to reflect
 7) Integrated / applied over areas/ subjects
 8) Integrated with assessment
 9) Use content for own right and not as preparation for something
else.
 10) Diversity of outcome
I will use these characteristics throughout my authentic tasks
What do you know
about advertising??
 It is a type of communication that has a purpose of
influencing potential customers about products and
services. (Cambridge Advanced Learner’s
dictionary. 2008).
 We need to follow the following AIDA principle
when analyzing or designing an advertisement.
 The AIDA principle is as follows.
 A- ATTENTION. The advertisement needs to grab
the attention of the customers.
 I- INTEREST. The advertisement should interest
the customer. Thus your advertisement should be
interesting and different in order for it to stand out.
 D- DESIRE. Your advertisement should great a
desire in the customer to buy your product.
 A- ACTION. The customer must buy your
product.
 Quickly divide yourselves into groups of four students.
You will need to collaborate with these four friend on
an assignment.
 Now in your groups you need to use the previous
information for the following.
 Step 1. Design your own product. This can be any
product however you cannot use an existing product so
be creative. Your product must be unique! (20
MARKS).
 Step 2. After designing your product you will need to
design an A3 advertisement to advertise your product
to your grade ten peers. Thus they will be the audience
you want to sell this product to. (30 MARKS).
 Each student in the group will be responsible for an
aspect of this assignment this assignment has four
aspects.
 1. Planning and designing your product.
 2. Making your product.
 3. Planning your advertisement.
 4. Making your advertisement.
 With out one of these aspects your assignment will be
incomplete.
 You will have two weeks to complete this assignment .
Through out these two weeks you are welcome to
come and share your progress with me and get some
feedback.
You will then need to share your product and
advertisement with your peers during class on the 1
October 2015.
 All aspects of this assignment will be handed in
thus all planning, rough drafts, designing and
meeting minutes will be handed in.
 With each aspect of the assignment there should be
an reflection from the student responsible for that
aspect of the task. For example: It was very
interesting designing this product because it had to
be unique.

 This link offers some resources that can be used in
the development of your unique product and
advertisement.
 I also encourage you to use the internet for some
great ideas.
 Attached as a word document is a printable copy
of this assignment and your rubric.
