Specific Achievements on steam Turbine –Generator

1. 3X140 MW Units: Turbine was facing LP Last but one stage rear blade failure/s . It was studied by
ourselves along with operation Engineer and revealed that condensed water from gland seal steam line
inundated upon LP rear 24th
stage out let causing failure of 25th
Stage (rear) blades during boiler fire out
and Motoring of Turbine .It is a matter of interest that in these three units a provision is there to allow
Motoring for short time during Boiler Fire out and within a short time boiler normalisation with
restoration of generation takes place. In fact ELD line (Return of Gland seal steam) was connected to
24th
stage rear extraction instead of common line of both side (LP) extraction and that causes failure of
LP Rear stage (25th) only taken placed.
2. I modified the ELD Line to cut from entering in 24th
stage rear extraction and dumped it into condenser.
Such modification has been done in all 3X140 MW Turbine and by the bless of God no any blade has
been failed in either of 3X140 MW Turbine since last 12 years.
In this way I had experienced number of troubled shooting and modifications during my 20 years of
responsibility in these Steam Turbines.
3. 120 MW Unit #4: After facing LP Blade failure during Motoring after trip out of unit in 1999,I checked
certain parameters of Turbine and Generator externally and rehabilitated the machine just by bye-
passing two LP failed stages(Rear). In this course, Liner no 2 of LP rear has got repaired from ABB
Durgapur with the cost of Rs 70,000/- only and assembled the machine by utilising departmental
manpower and rehabilitated the Turbine for generation within 100 days for 80/85 MW.I Used inter stage
sealing for dummy diaphragms (Bye-Passed stages) as such unit generated up to 80/85 MW without
any thrust unbalance. HP Turbine, IP Turbine and Generator were externally examined and no any
internal dismantling was done. It was great achievement in my professional life.
4. 120MW Unit #4: I investigated and solved the problem of low lub oil pressure of Turbine lub oil System.
Investigation revealed that NRV of DC Oil pump was passing as such we modified the lift of NRV
internal plunger by machining process and problem of low lub oil has been solved.BHEL had published
the matter in his Journals with award of Rs.500/- to me that I had given to my beloved technician who
had done the work positively following my instruction.
5. 120 MW Unit#5: Unit no 5 was suffered HP Turbine blade failure twice during hot rolling within very
short span of time during 1996-97. I investigated the problem and found that HP casing loop drain
orifice was chocked by red oxide deposit, I increased the orifice hole from 6mm to 10 mm to restrict the
risk of choking and machine had not faced any failure for more than 5 years.
6. 120MW Unit #5: Unit faced axial seal failure in Generator rear side that caused grooving in Seal Collar.
I rehabilitated the machine by grinding and polishing of seal collar.PCD of holes on seal body face has
been changed to suit upon seal collar to establish seal film and finally Seal was assembled by adding
champion gasket to suit the lost thickness of collar in seal carrier assembly. Machine was put to restore
generation.
7. Dynamic Balancing of Turbine and other Dynamic Equipments, like ID Fan, Fan, CT Fan ,FD Fan,
Pumps etc
Above experiences was for more than 20 years (1986 to 2006)
8. Erection and commissioning of Turbine Generator 2X250MW Chandrapura Extension for four and half
year(2006 to 2010)
9. Erection and commissioning of Turbine of 2X600MW Raghunathpur Thermal Power Station for three
years(2010 to 2013)
10. O&M of 3X210MW Bokaro Thermal Power Station for one year and eight month(2013 to 2015)
11. Presently holding responsibilities of Post Commissioning and O&M of 2X600MW and Erection of
2X660MW Super Critical Unit of Raghunathpur Thermal Power Station
