EVENTS IN THE UNITED STATES HISTORY (part 4)
1872 Congress created first national park - Yellowstone in Wyoming.
1876 Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone.
1879 Thomas Alva Edison invented the electric bulb, stimulating a rapid growth in the U.S. science
and technology.
1884 The world's first skyscraper (10 stories) was begun in Chicago. Gold was discovered in the
Klondike region of Alaska, triggering another gold rush.
1898 The USA defeated Spain in the Spanish-American war. Under the terms of the peace treaty, the
USA received Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines.
1902 Electric theatre, America's first movie house, opened in Los Angeles, California.
1903 The Wright brothers made the first successful airplane flight.
1908 Henry Ford introduced efficient, low-cost car, beginning the era of mass production.
1915 D.W. Griffith's The Birth of a Nation, the first full-length feature film, was released.
1917-1918 The U.S. joined France, Great Britain, Italy, and Russia in the World War I struggle
against Germany.
1929 A stock market crash brought financial ruin to thousands and started the great depression. It
was the period of hardship for many, and it lasted for a decade.
1933 The New Deal Program to end the depression began under president Franklin D. Roosevelt.
Many government public work projects provided work and wages for the unemployed.
1936 Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected to the second term as president and, in1940, to the
unprecedented third term.
1939 As Europe plunged into war, president Roosevelt declared American neutrality.

Answer the questions:
A lot of inventions were found out at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. Why?
What is your opinion? Why did the Great Depression occur? What did Roosevelt do to overcome the
Depression?
