'BBC Radio Ulster' will celebrate its thirtieth birthday with a series of concerts
next month featuring rock bands, folk music and traditional Irish acts. A two-
day outdoor music festival called 'LaganLive' will be staged on May 28 and 29
at Custom House Square, Laganside, Belfast with a line-up that includes The
Thrills, Therapy?, The Undertones and The Revs. The celebrations kick off
with a 'Marathon Music Day' on 2 May when the station will present seven
hours of special music on-air. Gloria Hunniford and John Bennett were the first
voices heard by listeners when the station opened at midnight on December
31 1974 and Hunniford was invited back to be guest of honour at last week’s
launch party.
'BBC Radio Shropshire' celebrated its twentieth birthday with an exclusive
party at the Enginuity museum in Ironbridge. Managing editor Tim Pemberton
made a presentation about the station’s history to guests that included the
Mayor and Mayoress of Shrewsbury, Atcham Miles and Aurona Kenny,
borough council chief executive Robin Hooper and county council chairman
Adrian Coles.
'Virgin Radio' held a party in London for 300 guests, mainly advertisers and
commercial clients, to convince them that the station was much stronger than
recent critics had claimed.
