Two of Europe’s largest satellite operators, Luxembourg’s SES and France’s
Eutelsat, have joined forces to launch a pan-European satellite-delivered radio
and TV capability that can deliver content to mobile devices.
The 50:50 joint venture, requiring an initial investment of €130m, intends to
launch a six-ton Alcatel satellite in early 2009 that will deliver subscription
broadcast services to owners of mobile phones, car radios and handheld
devices in the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Poland and Spain. The
announcement is intended to spur European equipment manufacturers and
governmental agencies to provide the hardware and regulatory framework for
direct mobile reception from satellite.
