Renters’ insurance helps protect tenants in many situations. Here are four disasters covered by renters’ insurance, and not by your landlord's insurance policy.
2. There are a number of disasters that your landlord’s
insurance policy won’t cover.
DID YOU KNOW?
3. And guess who would be liable instead?
That’s right: YOU.
4. IN FACT:
Landlord insurance policies typically only cover
damage to the structure of the building and certain
types of negligent situations, such as failing to treat
iced sidewalks to prevent a slip and fall.
5. PROTECT YOURSELF AND YOUR STUFF.
Here are four disasters covered by
renters’ insurance…
7. GUEST INJURIES
If your actions or negligence leads to an injured
guest on your rented property, you’d be financially
liable to cover medical and legal costs. Most policies
come with $100,000 of liability coverage, but you can
get $500,000 liability coverage for about $20 more
per year.1

9. DAMAGE CAUSED BY YOU
For many renters, this is your first time living on
your own. Accidents happen. A cooking fire, a
flooded bathtub…renters’ insurance can protect
you when you accidentally cause damage to
your landlord and neighbors’ property.

10. TIP:
Know your deductible and how it works. When
you file a claim, you must pay the deductible.
This can be as low as $100 and other times
much higher, such as $2,500. Make sure you’re
comfortable with the deductible amount stated
in your policy.
12. THEFT
If you’re the victim of a burglary and your
personal belongings are stolen, renters’
insurance will help cover the cost to replace
what was lost.
Disaster #3
13. TIP:
Be mindful of replacement cost value (replacing
an item with a similar one) vs. true cost value
(replacement cost minus depreciation, or age
and wear, of the item) and know which one is in
your policy.
15. STORMS & OTHER DISASTERS
If you’re displaced by a storm or other natural
disaster, such as a hurricane or fire, renters’
insurance can help with additional living
expenses. This would allow you to find and
pay for temporary lodging and possibly
relocation services, if the building is deemed
uninhabitable.
Disaster #4
16. TIP:
If you live in a flood-prone or earthquake-prone
area, you should look into purchasing additional
insurance coverage specifically for floods or
earthquakes because these are not typically
included in a standard renters’ insurance policy.
17. Other Disasters
These are just four disasters that renters’
insurance will cover, and your landlord will not.
You may also want to ask your insurance agent
about identity theft coverage, or extra coverage
for hard-to-replace items like your engagement
ring or expensive equipment, which all fall
outside a standard policy.
