Requirements for Donating Blood to the American Red Cross

  2. 2.  The American Red Cross is an organization dedicated to ensuring that at-risk populations have access to clean and usable blood. Geody Bennett regularly donates blood to the American Red Cross. Like all donors, Geody Bennett must meet certain requirements before giving blood.
  3. 3.  1. Donors must be healthy. Being healthy involves eating correctly, practicing proper hygiene, and maintaining proper levels of vitamins and minerals. 2. Donors must be of age. All blood donors must be at least 17 years old, although certain states will allow 16-year-olds to donate blood if one of their parents gives consent. Check www.redcrossblood.org to see the requirements of individual states. 3. Donors must weigh a minimum amount. Blood donors must weigh at least 110 pounds before they can donate blood. There are additional weight requirements for donors younger than 18 or in high school.
