Founded in 1875 by the Bauer family The Bauer Publishing
Group comprises 282 magazines worldwide in 15 countries, as
well as TV and radio stations. Bauer started in the UK with the
launch of Bella magazine in 1987 and as H Bauer Publishing
became Britain's third largest publisher. Bauer further expanded
in the UK with the purchase of Emap Consumer Media their
products reach 19million people in the UK alone so they are
mainstream, they produce the music magazine ‘Kerrang’.
3. IPC Media
Founded In 1958 Cecil Harmsworth King in the UK they
are the UK's leading consumer magazine publisher we
engage with 26m UK adults - almost two thirds of UK
women and 42% of UK men. They produce NME which
is a mainstream magazine.
4. Emap
Natasha Christie-Miller has been CEO at Emap for 11 years but it
was originally founded in 1947. Their aim is to produce accurate,
specific information to enhance an industry's intelligence They
produce 20 different niche magazines mainly about different
industries, they used to produce ‘Smash Hits’ which was a pop
music magazine aimed at young girls.
5. Future PLC
Future PLC were founded in 1985 with one magazine, today they
distribute media in the UK, US and Australia creating over 200
publications, apps, websites and events. They produce a large
range of magazines including, gaming, cars, music, genealogy
and music. They publish ‘Metal Hammer’ which is a niche
magazine about the genre ‘Metal’ and news surrounding it
6. Who would publish my magazine?
I think ‘Future PLC’ or another similar smaller
company would publish my magazine as Hip-hop
is not a massively mainstream genre and my
magazine focuses purely on Hip-hop whereas
magazines such as ‘NME’ published by ‘IPC
Media’ cover a range of genres.
