1. Unit 6 Project
For this unit, please put together a resource list for three of the topics you studied. Be sure to
include books, journals, movies, websites, local organizations e.g. your community
foodbank etc. One of your roles as a health and wellness professional will be as a community
resource yourself, where people know they can turn to for reliable and current information.
Publish your list to your Webs.com website. Then, use the Respond link to post your website
address to the entire class. Be sure to include a brief description of what you added or
changed.

Stress may be a part of life, but it can also be managed with CAM.
Keegan does an excellent job defining stress and how to apply such
CAM as aquatherapy, aromatherapy, humor, mental imagery, massage,
music and relaxation techniques to it.
Exercise and Fitness
Books
Howley, E. T. (2007). Fitness Professional's Handbook. Champaign: Human Kinetics.
Though technical and targeted for the fitness professional, this book serves as
reference for its approach to fitness traininng and exercise prescriptions for
athletes, special populations (e.g., children, the overweight, and those with
diabetes). I also love its ―Total Fitness‖ philosophy on page six, it has refocused
and honed my mission to live and model fitness in all aspects of my humanity:
spirit, soul, mind, and body.
Television

If I would give anyone credit for my fitness and form, besides my own
motivation, it would be this man, Gilad Janklowisz, the fitness-extraordinaire
out of Hawaii, who continuously reinvents himself and exercises to change with
the times and styles in his quest to make fitness a relevant lifestyle choice – he
5. has won with me. Faithful to his exercise techniques since the 80s, I remain
motivated, fit, and strong through his currently aired programs, ―Bodies in
Motion,‖ and ―Total Body Sculpt,‖ both still delivering quality exercise routines
that keep me motivated and provide results. This Web site is comprehensive of
Gilad’s exercise ―dynasty‖ providing a collection of DVDs for purchase,
testimonials, Gilad’s biography and blog, and schedule of times and channels
the exercise programs air.
DVD
Blanks, B. (2005). Tae Bo Total Body Fat Blaster Work-Out. New York, N. Y. , U.S.A.:
Good Times DVD.
Intense, challenging, while very effective. Billy Blanks delivers in this
DVD. With this workout I strengthened and sculpted my core and
improved my balance and overall muscle tone. Highly recommended for
those with intermediate to advance skills or beginners looking to advance.
However, be wary, the 55-minute workout moves fast and is challenging
– preview prior to starting, obtaining physician release before beginning.
For this same reason, from the warm-up to the crescendo-ing final
routine, and engaging, placing a demand on your stamina, focus, and
determination.

Periodical
Chance, J. (2006, January 1). This is Your Life and Beyond. Essence , pp. 54, 55,
60, 62.
Women in their 20s, 30s and 40s will appreciate this timeless article that
encourages them to take personal responsibility for their health:
―Recommendations for women in their 20s on devising a food plan are cited.
Some women in 30s are gaining weight because their metabolism slows down.
Women at 40s should perform cardiovascular and strength-training exercises
to stay physically fit.‖ I found this article through Kaplan University Online
Library, but can also be accessed through Essence magazine’s database.

Nutrition
Books
Schlenker, E. D., & Long, S. (2007). Willams' Essentials of Nutrition and Diet Therapy, 9th
Ed. St. Louis, MO: Mosby Elsevier.
Great reference for academia and laymen, providing sound, easy-to-read, and -
understand information on everything nutrition: micro- to macronutrients, to
digestive processes, growth and development, nutritional counseling, definitions,
food as fuel source, drug-nutrient interaction, and special reporting features such
as Focus on Culture (information as it pertains to nutrition and culture, such as
Diversity in Food Patterns) and To Probe Further.
Kelinson, A. (2009). The Athlete's Plate: Real Food for High Performance. Boulder,
CO: Velo Press.
As an athlete physical optimal performance is the goal, but that must be balanced
with optimal fueling, therefore optimal nutrition should be another goal. Author
Adam Kelinson provides useful information regarding athletes and sports
nutrition, finding it ―crucial…to translate the traditional lifestyle of nutritious,
fresh ingredients into a system that could seamlessly fit into the busy lifestyle of
an athlete while simultaneously promoting increased health and performance.‖
(Kelinson, 2009, p. xiii). His recipe, Herb Quinoa-Stuffed Tomato with Egg and
8. Greens, is nutritious as it is delicious and filling, providing beneficial calories
necessary for optimal athletic performance. I like this book!

―A picture is worth a thousand words, and that’s why nutritionists use
symbols and shapes to answer the question, ―What should I eat?‖
Creatively using a dinner plate to illustrate the recommended daily
allowed foods and their portions, Harvard’s School of Nutrition offers
easy-access information based on the ―latest and best‖ science. I like it
because there is no sign-up process, just enter and read about ―…how
our food, drink, and activity choices affect our health—and [how the
Harvard’s Plate is] unaffected by businesses and organizations with a
stake in their messages.‖
