1. 10 Leadership Lessons From The First Season Of
Marvel's Daredevil For Netflix
So, are you done with Season 1 of Marvel’s Daredevil? (If the answer is NO,
then please close this doc and get back to work immediately!)
Best friends Matt Murdock & Foggy Nelson run a legal startup without a single
client, and without any capital! But, both of them have a dream and an
unwavering belief in their collaboration, Nelson & Murdock.
It took me a few fleeting seconds to connect with the underlying philosophy of
Daredevil. After that, the blind vigilante never lost my attention till the very end!
Here are 10 leadership lessons from Season 1:
1. “Smart don’t come out of books, kid. Smart is making the right
decision at the right time.” – Stick
Who cannot agree with that? Marvel’s Daredevil and all of its characters are
extremely level-headed; and this is one example.
We, at Fame Per Second, always stress on this point; books will lead us to a
certain point. It is only the real world that will pose real challenges for us to take
a calculated risk, a quantifiable decision.
2. 2. “Problems are just opportunities that haven’t presented
themselves.” – Fisk
We have already had such similar conversations with our clients (and no, they
are not underworld lords like Fisk) where they have shared similar pearls of
wisdom. We have thus rechristened ourselves in experiencing the problems as
opportunity areas.
3. “Anger is a spark… Rage is a wildfire” – Stick
Stick emphasises on a human emotion that we often tend to overlook while
being passionate about something. While anger tends to inspire, rage drives a
person crazy, almost to the brink of being non-negotiable and void of any
reason.
As marketers, we should be careful while walking this tightrope situation.
3. 4. “Some fights will just get you bloody” – Silvio
Some fights are worth fighting for. And some fights you need to dodge and
duck cleverly to avoid any ominous ending. Silvio mentions tactfully in Marvel’s
Daredevil that we need to be mindful of the consequence once the fight is over.
Else, it will only be bloody, leading to no meaningful conclusion.
5. “Wind blows the hardest the closer you get to the mountain top”
– Leland Owlsley
4. Going to the top has always been an arduous task; being at the top is no mean
task either, but the hardest is to actually make it to the top when we are very
close. A good finish is no easy job.
Even after we finish, there is no way we can be complacent and still.
Good and consistent quality work while driving towards a particular goal will
see culmination only when we wrap up its end beautifully.
6. “You don’t get to be the man on top without making enemies
looking to tear you down.” – Ben Urich
Ben went on to complement what Leland told earlier. While there will be enough
enmity, it is always recommended to do a reality check at every turn.
5. 7. “Man cannot be both light and shadow. One has to be sacrificed
for the other.” – Madame Gao
Madame Gao absolutely nailed it! We need to select our priorities; we need to
select our avatars. A man cannot live a dual life.
As a marketer, as an organisation, everybody should have their own speciality.
The POD should be strong; else the entire purpose of existence goes in vain.
8. “Emotion can turn the most circumspect of men careless.” –
Fisk
6. The bad man said it right! Certain decisions can go against a business entity; it
is at the hand of the decision-makers whether they will let their emotions drive
them or not.
9. “Each man must stand for himself or fall with the unworthy.” –
Nobu
Nobu sums it up what any righteous man would do. A part of Fisk’s cartel,
Nobu has always presented himself to be an upright version of a villain,
someone who knows why the particular crime was committed.
An org is driven by a set of individuals who are cogs to a wheel. However, an
individual should know her / his role in the org else the wheel comes off after a
certain point.
7. 10. “Time to stop taking a beating and start giving one.” – Stick
We go back to Daredevil’s master, Stick for the last lesson.
There will be tough times; and then, there will be moments for bouncing back.
We will all have to wait for these moments to strike back.
