The advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims
was 319,000, a decrease of 26,000 from the previous week's
revised level. The previous week's level was revised up by
1,000 from 344,000 to345,000. The 4 week moving average
was 324,750, an increase of 4,500 from the previous week's
revised average. The previous week's average was revised
up by250 from 320,000 to 320,250. The advance number
for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the
week ending April 26 was 2,685,000, a decrease of 76,000
from the previous week's revised level. The previous
week's level was revised down by 10,000 from2,771,000 to
2,761,000. The 4 - week moving average was 2,715,250, a
decrease of16,250 from previous week's revised average.
The governing council of the ECB at yesterday's meeting,
which was held in Brussels, decided that the interest rate
on the main refinancing operations and the interest rates
on the marginal lending facility and the deposit facility will
remain unchanged at 0.25%, 0.75% and 0.00% respectively.
The President of the ECB will comment on the considera-
tions underlying these decisions at a press conference start-
ing at IST 8 p.m yesterday.
COMMODITY BUZZ
Tracking a weak trend overseas, silver prices fell by 0.13
per cent to Rs 42,170 per kg in futures trade today as
speculators engaged in off-loading positions. at the Multi
Commodity Exchange, silver for delivery in September
lost Rs 54, or 0.13 per cent, to Rs 42,170 per kg, with a
turnover of six lots. July silver dropped by Rs 32, or 0.08
per cent, to Rs 41,421 per kg, in a business turnover of 304
lots.
Supported by rising demand from consuming industries in
the spot market and lower arrivals from producing re-
gions, mentha oil prices gained 0.92% to Rs 895.70 per kg
as speculators enlarged positions. At the Multi Commod-
ity Exchange, mentha oil for delivery in June advanced by
Rs 8.20, or 0.92% to Rs 895.70 per kg in business turnover
of 79 lots.
