Presented at DocTrain East 2007 by Joe Gelb, Suite Solutions -- Designing, building and maintaining a coherent information architecture is critical to proper planning, creation, management and delivery of documentation and training content. This is especially true when your content is based on a modular or topic-based model such as DITA and SCORM or if you are migrating to such a model. But where to start? Terms such as taxonomy, semantics, and ontology can be intimidating, and recognized standards like RDF, OWL, Topic Maps (XTM) and SKOS seem so abstract. This pragmatic workshop will provide an overview of the standards and concepts, and a chance to use them hands-on to turn the abstract into tangible skills. We will demonstrate how a well-designed information architecture facilitates reuse and how the information model is integrally connected to conditional and multi-purpose publishing. We will introduce an innovative, comprehensive methodology for information modeling and content development called SOTA Solution Oriented Topic Architecture. SOTA does not aim to be yet another new standard, but rather a concrete methodology backed up with open-source and accessible tools for using existing standards. We will demonstrate ֖and practice—hands-on—how this powerful methodology can help you organize and express information, determine which content actually needs to be created or updated, and build documentation and training deliverables from your content based on the rules you define. This workshop is essential for successfully implementing topic models like DITA and SCORM, multi-purpose conditional publishing, and successfully facilitating content reuse.

Slides from Taxonomy Boot Camp London 2016. Original abstract: In taxonomy for information management or web publishing, you are limited by the shape of the content. However granular your terms, most CMSs are only designed to apply them to whole documents or pages. Yet some organizations have more complex content management needs. Regulated industries need legal approval for individual chunks of text. Technology or manufacturing companies with complex product families must support users by filtering and displaying only the relevant information. Any organization with significant amounts of web copy must link to and from that copy effectively to meet the goals of the site. Structured content technologies are designed to meet these needs by managing and recombining smaller, templated chunks of content, typically stored as XML. Metadata is embedded in the content itself — from the whole document or page level to blocks within a page, and even to individual terms in a sentence. While these technologies are mature, the metadata that is used in them is often surprisingly unsystematic. Timely input from a professional taxonomist can provide enormous benefit in terms of content management and user experience. This talk shows how taxonomies can be applied effectively to structured content authoring and delivery environments. An end-to-end use case will be demonstrated, including templated XML authoring, smart page-level and inline tagging, and personalized delivery to end users, tying together content from different teams in an organization. The audience will learn how the business benefits of taxonomy can be multiplied when applied to granular, structured content.

The Increasing Criticality of MDM for Personalization for Customers and Employees Master data management seems to be one of those perennial, evergreen programs that organizations continue to struggle with. Every couple of years people say, “we're going to get a handle on our master data” and then spend hundreds of thousands to millions and tens of millions of dollars working toward a solution. The challenge is that many of these solutions are not really getting to the root cause of the problem. They start with technology and begin by looking at specific data elements rather than looking at the business concepts that are important to the organization. MDM programs are also difficult to anchor on a specific business value proposition such as improving the top line. Many initiatives are so deep in the weeds and so far upstream that executives lose interest and they lose faith in the business value that the project promises. Meanwhile frustrated data analysts, data architects and technology organizations feel cut off at the knees because they can't get the funding, support and attention that they need to be successful. We've seen this time after time and until senior executives recognize the value and envision where the organization can go with control over its data across domains, this will continue to happen over and over again. Executives all nod their heads and say “Yes! Data is important, really important!” But when they see the price tag they say, “Whoa hold on there, it's not that important”. Well, actually, it is that important. We can't forget that under all of the systems, processes and shiny new technologies such as artificial intelligence and machine learning lies data. And that data is more important than the algorithm. If you have bad data your AI is not going to be able to fix it. Yes there are data remediation applications and there are mechanisms to harmonize or normalize certain data elements. But looking at this holistically requires human judgment: understanding business processes, understanding data flows, understanding dependencies and understanding of the entire customer experience ecosystem and the role of upstream tools, technologies and processes that enable that customer experience. Until we take that holistic approach and connect it to business value these things are not going to get the time, attention and resources that they need.
