Government Grants For Single Mothers For College
Parenting is a very challenging adventure, especially for a single mother. Single mothers are the
most likely to feel the pressure of needing to have an income in order to provide for their kids.
Many single moms have not finished their studies, and this results in fewer job opportunities, thus
less income for her family. Fortunately, there are government grants for single mothers for college,
which can be used to fund their college education.

The main purpose of government grants for single mothers for college is to offer funds for
education to those who are not able to afford the expenses of going to school. Although these
grants usually do not pay for everything you need for college, tuition fees and books are typically
covered.

Different Government Grants For Single Mothers For College

In general, these government grants for single mothers are divided into two distinct types: the
Federal Grants and the State Grants.

Federal grants consist of, but are not limited to:

 Federal Supplementation Education Opportunity Grant or FSEOG - this grant is regulated by
the federal government and is given to students with the greatest financial need. In order to
apply for the FSEOG, the single mother has to accomplish the Free Application For Federal
Student Aid or FAFSA. Applications are then analyzed and qualified students will receive an
amount ranging from a hundred dollars to $4,000, which can be used to pay for the tuition,
        buy books, and other necessities.

 Pell Grant - like other grants, the single mother needs to fill up the FAFSA, which can help
the officials determine whether or not she is eligible for the college grant. Pell can offer up
to $5,350 in cash to those who have the greatest amount of needs.

 Academic Competitive Grant or ACG - unlike the first two grants, this one is a merit-based
grant, which is only awarded to college students, single mothers or not, who have attained
excellent grades during their high school studies.

 National Science and Mathematics Access to retain Talent or SMART - similar to ACG,
National SMART is academic-based grant, which is awarded to college students in their third
year or fourth year. Moreover, in order to qualify for the National SMART, you have to be
pursuing math, science, engineering, or foreign language. As with any other Federal grants,
applicants are required to file their FAFSA.

State grants, on the other hand, are based on a particular state’s laws. New York, Kansas, and New
Mexico are just three of the many states that offer grants to fund the college education of single
mothers.
If you are a single mother and interested in applying for a government grant to aid your college
education, do not forget to file your FAFSA, which can be done in certain government offices or
online. With dozens of government grants for single mothers for college, there is a huge possibility
that you may qualify for one.
