Hi there, my name is David Lee Martin.

I am also a BIG fan of Scrivener, so much so I have spent literally hundreds of
hours using the software, and developing some of the very best premium training
resources on the web to teach others how to get the most from Scrivener with the least
amount of pain.
Although, like many, I thought that Scrivener was super complicated and hard to
use when I first set eyes upon it, I have discovered that it is actually really very easy
(when you know how).

Get Started With Scrivener - Lesson 1

Meet Scrivener

One of the things that people struggle with when they first open Scrivener, is the
fact that it looks so different to familiar programs Microsoft Word.
Although the Scrivener interface looks complicated, once you have had a quick
walk-through you will soon discover that Scrivener is surprisingly easy-to-use.
First of all, let's familiarise ourselves with the Scrivener dashboard.
The main areas of the Scrivener dashboard include:

THE TOOLBAR

Up top, you have got the toolbar. The toolbar has lots of useful ways for you to
add content, and change the way you view your Scrivener a project. Generally,
you will just use a handful of the toolbar items on a daily basis, so again, once
you've used them a few times it will become second nature to you.
It is also really easy from within Scrivener to customise this to suit your own
needs and workflow, using the File-Preferences in the Mac version, or Tools-
Options on the PC, as well as some other places.
THE FORMAT BAR

The format bar is something that you will be very familiar with if you've ever used
Word before. Basically, it allows you to format your text within the Scrivener
content window.

Next, take a look over on the right and you will see the Scrivener Inspector
window. If you don’t see it hit the big blue ‘i’ button. Right now though, you really
don't need to worry about it. Click the big blue ‘i’ on the top right hand of the
Toolbar again to hide it away.

and finally, we have the all-important…
BINDER.

This is what throws most people when they first come to Scrivener. The binder is
the area over on the left-hand side next to the content window.

It acts very much like a three ring binder into which you would put all your
papers, your research and other items that are relevant to the project that you are
working on.
It is here that the documents that make up the manuscript of your book, your
report, or whatever writing project you were working on, are held and organised.
You can also pull in all sorts of research items, everything from a web page
archive, to an MP3. The Mac version even allows you to record audio notes
directly within the app.
The beauty of Scrivener is that all of your project files are kept in one place.
Instead of having several folders scattered across your hard drive, one with your
manuscript, another with research files, another for images or web links; not so
with Scrivener!
You can keep everything in one place, and easily reorganise all of the items in
your project right within the binder. Each chapter, or even each scene or section,
can have its own document within the binder and be quickly moved, rearranged,
nested and edited quickly and easily.
It is made even easier when you use the corkboard view, but that's for another
lesson.
All of these areas of Scrivener’s working dashboard are highly customisable
within Scrivener, and once you know what they all do (and why they do it) you
will definitely no longer be intimidated by the unusual looks that sometimes scare
people off after their first visit!

3 Easy Ways To Get Your Content Into Scrivener
There are lots of different ways to get your content INTO Scrivener. And at first
base, that’s the goal, right?
Later on, the BIG QUESTION will be, "how do I get my content OUT of Scrivener
in a format I can publish?" Whether that be for the web, for digital book
publishing, or for print, Scrivener makes it a breeze (once you know how).
But before we can do that we need to get everything inside, arranged and
formatted as we want, and prepped for publication.
Over the next few lessons we will touch all of these bases so you are confident
with each one of them.
Right now, lets cover just 3 of the most common ways to get content INTO your
Scrivener project...

The BIG Green Plus+ Button
!
The most common way to add a file or a folder to your Scrivener project is to
choose where you want a file or folder added to - for example, if you want to add a
folder or file to your Draft folder, click on the Draft folder in your Binder (see
yesterday's lesson if you don't already know what the Binder is), and then Click
the BIG Green + Button on the toolbar.
By default this will add a new text document to your project, but if you click and
hold you will be able to choose whether you want a simple text document, or a
new folder.

Footer Buttons

Down in the footer just beneath the Binder you will see a few tiny unassuming
buttons that will do the same as their more garish sibling, the BIG Green button.
You can click the '+' button to add a text file, or the button with a little folder pic
and a plus sign to add a new folder. Super simple.
File - Import...
You can also import files into Scrivener from other places, most notably
Microsoft Word. But pretty much any text based file at all can be pulled you’re
your Scrivener manuscript without trouble. Once inside you can then edit and
format these files in a host of ways to make them sing the tune you want to share
with the world.
You can also Drag & Drop files directly into Scrivener, another easy way to
import your content.
Time To Write

Now that you have some shiny new files and folders in your project, it's time to
get down with your funky creative self and start writing.
Click on the file you want to add some content to, click in the Content window
(the big white space begging for your masterful words to fill it) and start tapping
away like a keyboard king or queen.
Next we will look at basic formatting, and some cool ways to set up formatting
presets in Scrivener to save you a heap of time and headaches.

Become a Scrivener Formatting Superstar
Formatting in Scrivener is easy, especially if you are used to Microsoft Word,
Apples Pages, or similar word processing programs.
You can Bold, Italic, Underline, change Font Size, line spacing, create
bulleted and number lists, and more, all with the click of a button.
The real power comes into play when you begin to automate some of this styling
using Scrivener’s Preferences (Mac) or Options (PC), and Presets.

Preset From Selection
One of the least complicated ways to create a preset that you can use time and
again is to set the text in the content window (you know where I mean - the big
white box begging for your bestseller), then highlight the text, and jump up to
Format - Formatting - New Preset From Selection - you will be asked to
name your new preset and BAM - it's ready for you to use throughout your entire
project.
There are also a few ways to access the Formatting Preset once it is created - my
personal favourite is to click the little button on the far left of the formatting bar.

Just choose the text you want to format, hit this little button, choose your format
preset, and done!

But how about if you could have Scrivener format the body text, font and spacing
for every single document the moment it is created?
No problem...
Just jump over to Scrivener-Preferences (Mac) or Tools-Options (PC) and
click on the Formatting/Editor button.

This brings up a preferences/options dashboard where you can get things looking
just how you like 'em, and set that as your default for all future documents you
add to your Project.
It is a good idea to get this all lined up right at the outset of your project, saving
you having to backtrack and format documents that were already added before
you set this up.

Scrivener's exceptional organisational capabilities.

Conceptualise & Organise With the Scrivener
Corkboard
One of the unique features that sets Scrivener apart from many other applications
is it's incredible flexibility!
You have the freedom to view and organise your documents and inspiration all in
one place, and in whatever way works best for you.
Writing, research, even entire drafts and revisions, can all be kept right in your
Scrivener project, at your creative fingertips.
We could spend hours singing the praises of how Scrivener's feature packed
toolbox can help you reach your writing goals faster and with less effort, but for
now let's concentrate on just one - the Corkboard.
Scrivener's Different Views
Take a look on your Toolbar at the top of the Scrivener dashboard window and
you will see three little icons like this…

As mentioned, Scrivener allows lots of flexibility in how you work. The three
specific views you can experiment with are:
• Scrivenings - this allows you to view a document or series of documents
(even your entire manuscript) in the content window of the Scrivener
dashboard.
• Outline View - A bird's eye view of your project, with a host of
customisable stats ready for you to view in one place - you can even export
this as a spreadsheet.
• The Corkboard View - A feature packed way to quickly brainstorm,
conceptualise, organise, note, tag, keyword, status, label, synopsise...the list
goes on. Very cool.
• Full Screen or Composition view - A bit of a different thing in some
ways, but worth a notable mention - a great way to remove all the clutter
and concentrate on the number one thing - your writing. We will look at
this in detail in a later lesson.
The full screen distraction free composition mode button looks like this…

To access each of these just click the respective buttons on the toolbar - one click
and you're in.
The Corkboard icon shows (surprise, surprise) a mini corkboard with a couple of
cute cards stuck to it.
If you have a top level folder (for example your Draft or manuscript folder - but it
can be any folder at all within your binder), clicking this little icon makes the
Corkboard spring into action.

Some of the Things You Can DO through the Corkboard
You can access and accomplish many of Scrivener's beneficial features in several
ways, but I find that the Corkboard coupled with the Inspector (Click the big blue
'i' in the right hand corner of the toolbar) a streamlined way to quickly apply the
following to your documents:
• Give a document a crisp and clear synopsis.
• Apply labels to a document.
• Apply Status Stamps to a document (I especially like this one!)
• Quickly brainstorm and create new documents in my projects.

• Quickly rearrange the order of documents in your binder (just click
and hold on a card in the Corkboard and drag it to the place you would like
it to appear - this will be immediately reflected in the list of documents in
the Binder area on the left hand side of your Scrivener dashboard)
The next key element in the Scrivener jigsaw we will put in place is the Research
Folder.
This versatile repository for your brain is sooooo helpful, and gladly keeps all
sorts of project related files and media right where you need them, when you
need them.

Scrivener: Your One Stop Shop
For Research, Writing & Publishing
I am sometimes embarrassed by the disorganised state of my home office. It's
true.
However much I try and convince myself it is an expression of my creative
nature, the fact remains, way too often it is a mess! lol.
And my computer desktop is not much better!
Thankfully, Scrivener's kindness allows me to reign in my document and folder
accumulating tendencies, and keep all of my creative 'junk' (otherwise know as
research) in one place.
Everything from pictures, to movies, mp3's and web archives. Anything related to
the Project at hand has a place to live in Scrivener. It's great.
Instead of digital shrapnel scattered all over my hard drive, a folder for pics, a
folder for Word documents, another for web bookmarks and clippings -

AARRRGGG! Not any longer - all of them can live in harmony together tucked
away in my Research Folder until I have need of them.
The Research Folder is a life saver for folks like me (most of us are like the rest
of us, so I know I'm not alone).
You are able to drag pretty much any kind of file into the Research Folder in your
Binder, and Scrivener will deal with it. Most can also be viewed directly in the
content window of Scrivener too. This feature is a bit more full grown in the Mac
version, but as with other features, the PC version is coming up to speed quickly.

3 Ways To Get Stuff Into Your Scrivener Project Research
Folder
There are a few different ways to pull content into your Research folder. Here are
three of the most popular and useful...
1. Drag'n'Drop - my favourite by far. Grab an item from your hard drive,
click and hold, drag it across, and drop it into any folder in your Scrivener
Project binder folder. A copy will be made right in your Scrivener project,
ready for you to refer to any time you need to.
2. File-Import Files... Allows you to browse your computer for the files you
want to add, and have Scrivener bring them right into any chosen folder in
your Binder - in this case the Research Folder.
3. The Scratch Pad - Activate the Scratch Pad by pressing Tools- Scratch
Pad (PC) or Window-Show Scratch Pad (Mac) which allows you to take
notes from anywhere on your computer and append or add them to any
document or folder in your Binder.
The best way to get comfortable with the new tools you now have at your disposal
is to actually put them to use.
Seriously, just have some fun and experiment. You will soon discover which ones
work as part of your creative flow, and which ones you prefer to consign to
untouched menu items.
Without a little focussed play, you will never find out though. Go on, have a go
today and see what happens. :)

Putting It All In Place
OK, you've got all of your content INTO Scrivener - we are on our path to getting
it back out again as publishable blog posts, articles, books and digital editions.
But before we do that, we will need to get everything lined up just the way we
want it.
As you will already have gathered, Scrivener is so much more than just a word
processor - it is an entire environment for your creative writing
projects. Regardless of whether you are writing academic papers, creative fiction,
children's books or how-to training like I am right now, Scrivener puts the tools
in your hands to get it done as efficiently as possible, and to the highest standard.
As well as having exceptional text formatting and editing capabilities, the clever
architecture of the software makes adding, moving, rearranging, deleting,
grouping and merging files and folders a very simple mouse click process.
There are so many things we could cover when we look at the productivity and
organisational capabilities of Scrivener, But in an effort to keep things as
concentrated and as simple as possible, here are just a few of the starting blocks.

The numbers below refer to this image/PDF and cover a lot of organisational

Number One – Your Manuscript/Draft Folder
This is one of the default folders in your Scrivener binder, and is the most
important of all! The documents that are housed within this special folder are the
ones that will make up your final manuscript.
Number Two – Simple Rearranging Of Files And Folders
Within Your Project
You can add text documents, and folders, into your manuscript/draft, and easily
rearrange them so they sit just where you want them before compiling for
publication or print.

One helpful little trick to do this easily, and prevent folders or files being
accidentally nested when you move them around, is to customise your toolbar
with the arrow keys. These keys allow you to click on a document in your project
and use them to move them up, down, what out or indent them within your file
structure.
On the PC just go to Tools – Customise Toolbars, and on the Mac go to View
– Customise Toolbar, and you will be able to quickly see the array of options
that you can use to make the writing and organisational environment at Scrivener
your own.
You could for example have a folder for each chapter of your book, and then
several text documents within each folder representing scenes and sections of
that chapter. These can then be rearranged, moved up and down, and nested as
you require. Once you are happy with everything, you can either have Scrivener
run all of those documents together in the Compile process, or you could merge
them into one document before you do so.
In digital editions, you can specify which levels of document will lend their titles
to become clickable tables of content in your books. It can be a little confusing at
first, but with a little practice and experimentation, pulling your chapter titles
from files and folders in your manuscript/draft can be a great time saver.
Number Three – Custom Icons
If you are a very visual person, or if you develop a more complex organisational
structure within your Scrivener a project, you may want to apply custom icons to
various kinds of folders or files. This is very easily achieved by right clicking on
the icon of any file or folder in your binder, and you will be given the
option to then change that icon to what you want.
Number Four – Front Matter
It is possible within Scrivener to create a specific folder from which certain
documents of your choosing will be optionally pulled into the front end of your
completed manuscript.

What this means, is that you could have different front matter for a draft
manuscript, for a paperback novel, and yet another for your digital edition  
e-book, all within the one overall Scrivener project.
Utilising the front matter feature means you can have all of your files in one
project, and compile them in a different way for different platforms or purposes.
No more need for different folders and documents on your hard drive for each of
your editions, you can keep everything nicely organised and ready to roll in one
place.
Number Five – The Research Folder
Another default folder that will appear in your binder when you first open
Scrivener project is the Research Folder. This becomes the repository for all
kinds of different media, text files, images, audio or video. You can even pull in
web archives, and links to articles on relevant pages you find on the Internet.
Again, this is just one of Scrivener's rich features that helps you keep everything
in one place, not just your manuscript. Everything that goes along with making
that manuscript of yours the very best it can possibly be.
Number Six – Templates
Scrivener also allows you to create special template files they can be reproduced
time and again. An example is the Novel Template (comes pre-packed with the
Scrivener software) which includes templates for both character sketches, and
setting sketches. It is then possible to open new files from these templates,
without actually touching the templates themselves, so they can be used again
and again.
Number Seven – Trash
No explanation needed! If you don't want or need an item any longer, just drag
and drop it here and it will no longer clutter your binder. The nice thing is
though, it is not gone forever, until you actually empty the trash, so if you
accidentally get rid of something it is not the end of the world - you can restore it
to your project very easily. Think of the Trash as a recycle bin until you
specifically empty its contents.

Hopefully this brief overview has gone some way to familiarising you with the
organisational environment that you will enjoy when you use Scrivener to craft
your writing projects.
Although Scrivener at first glance can sometimes look complicated because it
truly is feature packed, and overflows with benefits for anyone who is creating
any kind of written content, once you get under the hood and grasp how and why
it works the way it does, it is actually very simple to use.
In fact, the ease with which you can develop and shape your projects in Scrivener
will save you hours, days and even weeks of time compared to other solutions.
I have no doubt, once you spend a little time with the software, you will love it
just as much as I do.
We are now ready to take all that we have created within Scrivener, and
transform it into something beautiful for the world to share, using Scrivener's
incredible Compile engine.

Introducing The Compiler
There is no way we could cover every base of the Compile engine in one short
pitstop - but we can certainly introduce this publishing juggernaut to you and
remove any trepidation you may have when you first tackle the beast (it's actually
a pussy cat, honest!).
Apart from all the other fine features of Scrivener, the Compile engine is the
queen of the crop. Regardless of the platform you want to publish to, this
masterful piece of software engineering is going to become your very best friend.
It looks complicated at first, but don't be intimidated. There are indeed lots of
bells and whistles, yes, but you don't have to ring and blow them all to get great
results. Straight out of the box Scrivener comes with a bag load of presets that
will polish your manuscript ready for publication with very little customisation
necessary. Just make a couple of choices in the compiler in the Format As
dropdown, and the Compile For dropdown and hit the COMPILE button.
I do suggest, if you have a little time to play, experimenting with the different pre-
packed choices. You will find that Scrivener actually comes trigger ready for most

of your needs, and once you become a bit more familiar you can tweak until your
heart is content.
Once you have worked the engine a little, and realised that despite having a lot
power under the hood, it is safe to drive, you can then explore the incredibly
versatile host of options that you can use to shape your manuscript in pretty
much any way you want to.

Here are some of the formats you will be able to export your
file to...
• Print
• PDF (Scrivener also allows you to create a clickable table of contents in
your PDF documents by selecting the documents you want in the ToC and

clicking Edit-Copy Special-Copy Documents As ToC, and then pasting the
results onto your contents page)
• Rich and Plain Text (I find plain text useful if I am pulling over onto the
web and want to strip any styling from the document before I do)
• Microsoft Word or OpenOffice (allows you to easily share your work with
people who are still using this somewhat lesser word processing piece of
software)
• Screenplay (Final Draft or Fountain)
• ePub (ready for the iBookstore, Kobo or Nook)
• Kindle (prepped for Amazon's bestseller shelves)
• iBooks author (ready to pull into Apples propitiatory iBook publishing
software)
• Web page (html) or Web Archive (sometimes you may want to export your
styling to bring into WordPress or other web platform - this is one way to
accomplish this)
• MultiMarkdown (an easy way to get web pages looking fine and dandy,
without knowing html or other geekery - well worth a look if you are
creating posts and pages for the web in Scrivener)
Because of the power and complexity of the compiler it is impossible to cover all
you need to know in this one short introduction.
We will look at a couple of popular and specific uses in lessons that follow
(including a complete walkthrough of Kindle publishing from beginning to end).
As you will discover, even simple use of the compiler yields pretty impressive
results.
Quite literally, you can transform and shape your Manuscript/Draft in
numberless ways as you wrangle it through the compiler's options.
In the next lesson we will look at one of the most useful and popular compile
presets - Compiling for Amazon Kindle. This one benefit of Scrivener alone has
saved me endless hours of frustration, and made me lots of nice $$$ because I
have been able to easily and quickly develop and publish books to the Kindle
platform.

Compiling For Kindle - Plain & Simple
This was actually one of the main reasons I tackled Scrivener after not daring to
touch it for months (possibly years!). I actually owned the software right from its
version 1.0 days, but like so many had opened it up, choked on how complicated
it looked, and consigned it to the one-day-I-might-use-this debris on my hard
drive.
I then began to publish to Kindle. I used Word at first, and then some other
online and PC software options that I came across.
The problem was, the workflow and end product was just not up to the standards
I wanted my books to be known for.
Enter Scrivener.
I updated to the latest version (version 2.0 for Mac at the time I think) and began
pulling my content into the Draft/manuscript folder.
It was certainly not as frightening as I remembered? Maybe a lot had changed, or,
more likely, my need for a serious scalable solution for my growing publishing
needs had increased to the point where I was ready to invest some headspace into
actually learning how this amazing tool could help me reach my goals.
20 minutes later I had a perfect .mobi file ready to upload to Amazon!

WRITING!
All of the cool features are there to help, but what are they if Scrivener cannot
help you actually WRITE more efficiently?

I read a quote recently that stated, "easy reading is damn hard
writing" (Nathaniel Hawthorne).
How true this is, and how incredibly focussed one must be to really turn writing

(until you want them), so you can focus entirely on getting those words out of
your heart and onto the page.

your document.
2) Sit your paper left/right/center.

Your videos do that. You also show how easy it is to fix any errors someone might make in the writing and
publishing process. (I can be so immersed in the creative process, I regularly click the wrong buttons in
