Update
Your Photo
Quick
Win
#1
Whether you’re using a professional
picture or a photo you snapped with
your iPhone, you need to make sure
that you’re either smiling or wearing a
neutral expression.
A warm smile is best.
5 minutes
Studies of body language and psychology have proven
that more people will connect with and understand you
if you’re smiling. It’s just like when you meet someone in
person: look them straight in the eye and smile. Be open:
no folded arms or closed body language.
Fake smiles are the worst. Again, body
language experts reveal that we can
instantly detect a forced smile. Even
if you’re just doing it for your profile,
make sure it’s genuine otherwise
people will potentially think you are
“disingenuous” or “cheesey”.

To create a
real smile,
either take the
photo thinking
of something
that genuinely
makes you
happy like
seeing a loved
one or have a
friend take it
whilst making
you laugh.
Obviously professionally taken
photos are best but that’s not
always an option. Check out
LinkedInxpress.com for some
ways to take a professional-looking
photo on your smart
phone.
It’s better to have a lowish
quality, genuine photo, than a
slickly produced photo where
people think you’re fake or
hiding something. People
aren’t suckers, so be genuine.
That’s the first quick win:
upload a photo of yourself,
preferably one where you’re
smiling.
Go, do it now. If you need to
crop or edit and don’t have
software, go to www.pixlr.com
and do it online.

Job Title

Your job title is located just under your name in your profile, and
if it is purely descriptive, eg. “Publisher”, “Accountant”, “Lawyer”
etc. THEN it’s time to update it.
Just hit Edit Profile, click
the small pencil, and
update away.
There are two important things to consider - keywords
and personality.
Stay away from only using purely descriptive titles like
mentioned above. People, customers and media search with
those kinds of keywords, which is why having them in your job
title can and will help you. But you also want your title to work
as a sort of “mini pitch” to reel people in, to interest them in
what you do.
This is no time to be modest: instead, be exciting, be
interesting, be clear. Let them know who you are, what you do,
and where you do it. Don’t slide into that stiff, resume-style,
two-word descriptor where you say “administrative assistant” or
“lead marketer.” Be creative.

And don’t worry about it being too long—if
suitable you can go all the way up to the
word limit.
Just focus on crafting an engaging and readable job title.
LinkedIn doesn’t have to be as bland as your standard resume,
so spice things up. That’s the second quick win. Go, do it now.
7. Refresh Your
Summary

Applying the old 80/20 rule
(see Pareto Principal) your
profile summary does most of
the heavy lifting. If you were
going to edit one part of the
body of your profile, this is the
one to pick.
In essence, it’s your pitch,
so you need to get it right.
Imagine what you might say
to someone at a networking
function in person, then jot
that down and start with that.
Remember to be personable,
warm, and inviting —you’re
welcoming people and
encouraging them to

Tell people who you are and
what you care about. In fact,
LinkedIn starts with these
words: “I am passionate
about...” The idea is that you
talk about yourself and your
passions so that people will
want to connect with you.
Think Simon Sinek, people
want your why not your what.
How about an example?
Ok, let’s say you’re a network
engineer. Don’t start your
summary by saying, “Hi, my
name is blah blah blah and
I am a network engineer.” If
you do have to do that, add
onto it, saying something like,
“but I am passionate about
delivering great customer
service” or “working in a field I
love.” Make it personable and
interesting. Remember, this
ain’t no resume.
It’s a mix of marketing,
branding and personality.
This is like an introductory
pitch you would give in person,
except it’s doing that job for
you 24/7. Hungry sales teams,
customers, clients and HR
teams scour linkedin, hunting
for people just like you.
Don’t overcomplicate it.
Just do it.

CONCLUSION
These are three quick wins that will raise your
LinkedIn profile one level closer to all-star, and
the best part is: they won’t take you much time at
all. If you don’t have time to overhaul your whole
profile just yet, then go for these quick wins, it’s
15 minutes very well spent.
So grab a coffee, login and get started…
your time starts now!
