- Yes, men tend to be larger than women; but all things being equal, a man can still out drink a woman. Women tend to have more fat and less water in their system which accounts for a small amount of the difference. Yes, it is more socially acceptable for a man to drink larger quantities so part of the reason may be psychological. But the real reason is that women have about ½ the amount of gastric ADH which breaks down alcohol in the stomach as men. About 30% of the alcohol consumed by men is broken down in the stomach and never makes it to the blood stream. Only about 15% for women.
- Yep, high fat, high protein foods such as cheese, meat, pizza, nuts, etc. are the hardest for your body to break down and therefore slow the absorption of alcohol into your blood stream.
- The top liver is healthy. The bottom right has fatty liver and the bottom left has cirrhosis of the liver. Fatty liver is similar to cirrhosis of the liver in the functional limitations of the liver but different because unlike cirrhosis which typically occurs after years of abuse, fatty liver can occur over a very short period of binge drinking. OTC and prescription drugs should NEVER be used in combination with alcohol because of the increase in time it takes your liver to break down both the drugs and alcohol. Tylenol is especially harmful to your liver when mixed with alcohol.
- Alcohol is an irritant that irritates your stomach and intestinal lining and that in itself may cause vomiting. Vomiting may be caused by high toxicity levels in the blood which trigger the pyruvic valve (separating the stomach and small intestine) to close and expel the contents of the stomach so that no further alcohol can be absorbed. At that point there may be enough alcohol in the system that if the contents of the stomach were to be absorbed it would actually be fatal.
- Unearned tolerance is usually genetic which means a predisposition to alcoholism. Earned tolerance would be similarly identified as a warning sign of alcoholism. Tolerance means that your body has become accustomed to the presence of alcohol to the point that more of it is required to give you the same “buzz”.
- About 80% of all suicides involve an intoxicated victim. Decreased inhibitions leads to making decisions that would not normally be made. For example, having sex with someone you just met or without a condom, driving with someone who is under the influence of alcohol or driving drunk. Sober people wouldn’t do that. Remember…9% of students who participate in high risk drinking admit to have driven after they have been drinking. 7% ride with a drunk driver. 3% had sex with someone they just met. 3% had sex without protection.
