First aid

2. First
aid is the provision of initial care for
an illness or injury. It is usually performed
by non-expert, but trained personnel to a
sick or injured person until
definitive medical treatment can be
accessed.
Immediate
care given to a victim of injury
or sudden illness until more advanced care
can be provided.

4. First aid is given to a victim in an emergency for four
purposes:
 To preserve life.
To protect the unconscious victim.
To prevent the condition from worsening and to
relieve pain.
To promote recovery.

12. Legal considerations
The
first aider is expected
to act reasonably and
prudently with a genuine
concern for the best
interests of the victim.
The first aider has nothing to
fear as long as he or she acts reasonably,
with caution,
and follows accepted teaching
and protocols.
