Managers- Don’t take sides!
Managers in companies of all sizes (startups, small business, middle market,Fortune 500 etc.)
should focus more on building company wide relationships and less on being loyal to just a
single individual (e.g. your immediate supervisor or business unit head). Also, maintain your
professionalism and be ready to work for anyone within your company (without hesitation).This
is vital for your growth and survival during periods of great change such as company slowdown,
mergers and acquisitions or radical transformationof organization structures/business units.
Do not be perceived as belonging to one camp (or to a single individual).Develop your relational
skills across business units, supervisors and peers, and participatein company wide initiatives.
This is especially vital in companies that operate under the matrix structure, where supervisors
are rotated frequently or even your peers being promoted to lead the business unit. When you
maintaina company first attitude, chances are that it may extend your career and future growth
opportunities.
