Healing Shoe
CARE & USE GUIDE
General Description
The healing shoe is designed to offload pressure from
areas of the foot that are injured. They are commonly
used for patients with diabetic ulcers or other open
wounds on the plantar surface of the foot. Also, for
patients who have a fracture and/or for post operative
care. It will take patience, as well as care and attention
on your part to become accustomed to wearing the new
shoe.
Application
Place your heel all the way back in the shoe, to ensure
a proper fit. Then tighten the straps as much as
tolerable.
Wearing Schedule
• Follow your physician’s recommendations on the
proper wearing schedule.
• Protect the skin by always wearing socks with the
orthosis unless you are wearing bandages.
• On the unaffected side, wear a stable shoe with a
heel height identical to the height of the other shoe.
Distinct differences in heel height will result in loss
of balance and gait instability.
• Do not drive a car or other vehicle when wearing the
orthosis.
Cleaning and Maintenance
• Wipe orthosis with a damp cloth.
Tips and Problem Solving
• Use a cane, crutches or walker for stabilization.
• Use extreme caution when walking on uneven,
unstable, wet or slippery surfaces or on ramps.
• Inspect your foot frequently for any pressure marks
in order to avoid soars or breakdowns.
• Get immediate medical attention for even the
smallest lesion.
• If you are a diabetic patient, always follow the
general preventive rules for diabetic care.
• Caution must be used while wearing this orthosis, if
another impairment affects your stance or gait
stability adversely (i.e. severely reduced vision or
equilibrium problems.)
