Morris Riedel JSC - The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Cloud standardization processes - Lightning Talk - CloudCamp Berlin 30.04.2009 - Presentation Transcript

    1. Some Suggestions based on Lessons Learned from Standardization and Interoperability of Next Generation Computing Infrastructures Morris Riedel Co-Chair of OGF Grid Interoperation Now Community Group Co-Chair of OGF Production Grid Infrastructure Working Group Interoperability Group Leader of Distributed Systems and Grid Computing Division Jülich Supercomputing Centre Forschungszentrum Jülich The Seven Habbits of Highly Effective Cloud Standardization Processes
        • Show initiative and taking action to get ‘major vendors’ on board ( already from the beginning – it’s the whole process that matters )
        • Force discussions ‘why not supporting’ and allow for ‘comments/changes’  avoid confronting vendors with a final version, do not ‘blame them’
      Habbit 1: Be Proactive
        • Setting together long-term goals with a common vision of all vendors
        • Have a roadmap that is not ‚too high-level‘ with ‚sufficient detail‘  in case of modular approaches with n specifications check missing links
Habbit 2: Begin with the End in Mind
        • First things in clouds are computation, storage, and most notably security
        • Try to work on these important areas ASAP, other areas will follow…  Use of PARETO principle – 80% of cloud functionality in 20% of time…
Habbit 3: Put First Things First
        • Standardization leads to a mutual benefit – collaboration is the key!
        • Over time, again and again, the key players will sit together on the table…  Save time by working together from the beginning – keep relationships
Habbit 4: Think Win / Win
        • Principles of Mutual Understanding are important during standardization  Sitting on the table and listen first is a way forward to reach agreements
Habbit 5: Seek first to understand, then to be understood
        • Creative Cooperation is important  Synergize standardization efforts
        • There might be different standardization bodies having useful specifications  try to leverage existing work as often as possible
      Habbit 6: Synergize
        • Over time and at some points standards should just exist as they are
        • Do not change the standards and thus interfaces too often  end-users that experience that change might loose interest over time…
      Habbit 7: Sharpen the Saw
    2. Thanks and Godspeed for the cloud standardization!
