bdoctor A1 - bad customer traits: Demanding unique custom features that take u off roadmap
taariqlewis RT @cindyfsolomon: Awesome! Please answer Q1: Regarding Product Management customers:
What are some traits of bad customers?
lmckeogh unreasonable expectations and belief that the world revolves around them
bfgmartin Lack of vision, no understanding of trade-offs, unwilling to compromise
MGjobs Misinformed, lack of information, rudeness, assumption that the client always right allows them to
misinterpret rules or business practices
cindyfsolomon @theproductguy says "going off roadmap, ask what's value being returned to product, cust &
grand scheme"
jidoctor unique custom features may not be bad, but become distracting so need to make sure they are
relevant
brainmates Are there any bad customers? Just not your customers
jidoctor it's really more about the kind & type of attention the customer demands, and the timeframe they
expect
bfgmartin If they're willing to pay for a custom feature, that's validation that there is a problem worth solving
brainmates @jidoctor True.
lmckeogh Not sure about this Stanzr product flow. Like to read from top to bottom. Feels unintuitive to read
up
brainmates @bfgmartin agree and those are 'good' customers :)
cindyfsolomon @lmckeogh Pls get used to it! Makes transcript generation much quicker this way!
MGjobs well there are, but its a good thing as bad customers are infact yearning for your product and it is
clear that they expect more out of it. Good sign...

catherine-constantinides @lmckeogh I agree. Will take some getting used to.
theproductguy Bad customers have trouble empathizing.
carlymicallef @lmckeogh agree not the greatest UI
cindyfsolomon Welcome @lmckeogh @rcauvin !
StanzrOne @catherine-constantinides @carlymicallef @lmckeogh Thanks for the feedback. we're taking
notes and listening.
theproductguy Bad strategy, bad business model, attracts bad customers.
lmckeogh How about an option to select either the top down or bottom up method? Also could use a
character count as well.
jidoctor amen! we in #prodmgmt can cause bad customer behavior (or in sales/support/dev/etc.)
lmckeogh It's a beta, perfect time for feedback. I thought is why we are on here.
StanzrOne @lmckeogh. Yes. We definitely are thinking folks need flexibility. Char count occurs 20 before
your 140 limit if Twitter user.
StanzrOne Otherwise, you have a 210 char limit.
cindyfsolomon @jidoctor how does #prodmgmt cause bad customer behavior? Important to realize!
jidoctor we set unreal expectations and poor communication
carlymicallef What about customers who go on the war path on social media tools?
lmckeogh @StanzrOne : but if I am at 21 the number doesn't show up and then I start a new sentence when I
should be shortening down
brainmates @carlymicallef Do they have a point though?
MGjobs @carlymicallef agree..

brainmates Maybe the word 'bad' is not quite right - they are just the wrong customer for your business
StanzrOne @lmckeogh You should get a green number at 120 chars and then red > 140. you don't have this
experience?
MGjobs @brainmates Not neccessarily as these are people taking the time to complain and such proves the
need for the product
carlymicallef I have one customer who had a problem once and has been tweeting complaints since, all kinds
of abuse, provides a good laugh sometimes...
cindyfsolomon Don't want to make a negative judgement "bad" rather a distinction - are they right customers
for you?
lmckeogh @StanzrOne : I do once I go above 120. But what if I am at 115, there is no indication that I should
be wrapping up my thoughts
MGjobs @carlymicallef thats defnitely not good!!
bfgmartin @brainmates but some customers just are _bad_ ;-)
jidoctor they could still be ur customer-not even the wrong ones-but they were not treated properly (respect)
& "difused" @ right time
cindyfsolomon We have @taariqlewis and @StanzrOne in the room taking feedback on product beta! HOpe
we're right customers for this product...
gander2112 Totally agree. FIRE them. RT @bfgmartin: @brainmates but some customers just are _bad_ ;-)
catherine-constantinides @theproductguy if a customer has unclear ideas, it is the organization's job to clarify
and elaborate upon them.
jidoctor by difused=were they heard and treated well at the right time before problem blew out of proportion
and went viral?
brainmates @catherine-constantinides Agree
jidoctor bad behavior does NOT equal bad customers

jidoctor but, i do support firing a customer when they don't fit the product market/problem
cindyfsolomon @jidoctor viral problems become customer service issues beyond just #prodmgmt
MGjobs @bfgmartin very very tue, but remmember basics it comes down to need and want and initially they
did seek both from yr product. I say accept it as a good sign and a clear factor of successes.
brainmates @gander2112 Absolutely you can fire them but I find the word 'bad' not helpful
gander2112 I have a customer who uses the product totally out of scope, and has constantly driven patches
that break other people
kfriedson A1: there are no bad customers, just bad prodmgrsupport & cust dev experts. How could a
customer be 'bad' I havt seen 1 valid response
rcauvin @brainmates @gander2112 Yes, you should fire employees because they're a bad fit, not because
they're bad employees.
cindyfsolomon @gander2112 definition of the wrong customer=breaks other customers' ability to use product
brainmates @gander2112 So this is not the 'right' customer for you.
gander2112 @brainmates I keep making that case, but we are addicted to their support
StanzrOne +1 MT @kfriedson: A1: there r no bad customers, just bad prodmgrsupport & cust dev experts.
How could customer be 'bad'?
rcauvin @brainmates @gander2112 Similarly, fire customers because they're a bad fit, not because they're
bad customers. #prodmgmt
kfriedson @cindyfsolimon- then that's a poorly built product.
MGjobs @brainmates the system moves fast and if alot of people are interacting at the same time becomes
a problem cause I had to scroll up quit a bit. Slow down the time from when comments are made to when it appear
cindyfsolomon stanzr feature request - option for pause scrolling!

bfgmartin @jidoctor - might be semantics but I think it has to come from PM first. You have to have a vision

cindyfsolomon @bfgmartin You identify the challenges/opportunities of #prodmgmt - have vision, share it,

theproductguy Show your bad customers what good customers look like.
MGjobs we give birth t products as managers and thus need to guide consumers how you grow it. We need
to clearly state what the product is and whatsits functions

cindyfsolomon Q3: Regarding Products: How do you prevent yourself from fixating on lesser feature(s)?
jidoctor A# you don't want to hear this, but LISTEN LISTEN LISTEN
bfgmartin Have a clear vision - so you see the forest for the trees
taariqlewis RT @cindyfsolomon: Q3: Regarding Products: How do you prevent yourself from fixating on
lesser feature(s)?
rcauvin A3: Focus on a single value proposition & prioritize features relative to it. #prodmgmt
MGjobs keeping to schedule and time frame of workflow projection
theproductguy Prevent feature fixation: timeboxing
lmckeogh Agreed, need long term vision / roadmap RT @bfgmartin: Have a clear vision - so you see the
forest for the trees
carlymicallef run your ideas by others, stick your ideas up in public workspaces, sometimes you just need
someone to pull your head in.
brainmates A3: Don't be bullied by others (management, customers etc)
cindyfsolomon RT @carlymicallef: run your ideas by others, stick ideas in public workspaces, sometimes you
just need to pull your head in.
brainmates I find that sometimes people get fixated on features because the company pushes them into that
corner
lmckeogh Use the Kano model to draw out the must have's, performance features, and those that deliver
unexpected excitement
MGjobs Time Management key factor and need to keep to it to get thejob done.
rcauvin A3: Base value proposition on a set of compelling prospect problems around a central theme.

bfgmartin Stanzr loses my messages every once in a while
brainmates @bfgmartin Mine too
lmckeogh Yes, it can be very useful and it is amazing how many don't know about it.
rcauvin @lmckeogh Be careful w/ Kano, it can lead to an unfocused product. #prodmgmt
cindyfsolomon @bfgmartin Oh no - you're points are important!
bfgmartin Timeboxing works. My roadmap is a time budget for problem solving - problem x is worth 1 week of
time to fix, problem y is worth 1 month etc
StanzrOne @bfgmartin is that your messages don't show up in Twitter or don't show up here?
wapolanco In case my prev comment got lost: Communication as a strategy with cust. Listen, chime in,
document then socialize your notes.
theproductguy Slice up your features into digestible pieces...more agility, more predictability
bfgmartin @StanzrOne don't show up here - type and type and hit send and then nothing
rcauvin A3: Use large user stories to ensure features are tied together & provide real value. #agile
#prodmgmt
jidoctor @bfgmartin you're messages are lost more than "once in awhile"
cindyfsolomon @bfgmartin what browser are you using?
bfgmartin Safari 5.1.1
StanzrOne @bfgmartin Got it. Thanks and thanks for the browser version.
cindyfsolomon No problems using Chrome browser - perhaps browser issues on stanzr

bfgmartin It's just budgeting time/resource and focusing on the problem instead of solution. Spend 1 week to
best fix that problem then MOVE ON
theproductguy OKR's: Set quarterly goals, and build your stories a target features from there.
StanzrOne @cindyfsolomon We're balancing 5 diff connection protocols for various browsers. Yes.
Something we need to address.
cindyfsolomon @theproductguy says beyond timeboxing - use OKR approach - objectives, quarterly results,
progress thru stories
theproductguy Assign business values to each of your features. Be sure to account for uncertainty & risk.
cindyfsolomon @theproductguy says quarterly is good chunk of time to realign w/changes in biz value, etc.
jidoctor @theproductguy agree. why would you even include a feature that had no tie to a stretegy/value?
bfgmartin @theproductguy agree on goal focus, as long as you don't lose yourself in quarters over the long
term and your product vision. Trees for the forest?
cindyfsolomon Audio discussion getting heated...@brainmates disagrees w/ @theproductguy
rcauvin @theproductguy I say don't think in terms of implementing features. Instead, implement user stories.
#prodmgmt #agile
MGjobs timelines, time frames and time guides needs to be strict and all concerned to be notified of such
cindyfsolomon Core values #prodmgmt "stay on right path" acc to @theproductguy
lmckeogh @brainmates that is the challenge to lead w/o authority. But that is Y you are paid the big $$
(cough,cough) It's communication
jidoctor moving forward w/o strategic value often leads to failure. product & company!
brainmates Great to focus on right features etc.. but PMs have the challenge of managing the biz - who may
not need see the 'story'

can't be discussed in isolation of the business

cindyfsolomon Do we have to distinguish what defines someone as product person? Passionate, designer,
developer, manager, if you love product
