2. In the pop/rock conventions they tend to have a lot of medium long shots of the
artists playing their instruments.
The reason why pop/rock is different to pop and to rock is:
Pop videos don’t tend to have the band playing instruments, if they do they
are blurred out and all we can see is the artists signing.
Rock videos are so heavily based on the artists playing their instruments that
they don’t tend to have a huge narrative base.
Additionally they don’t have any member of the band been shown more than
others, each role are equally shared. Each band member has the same
amount of performance into the camera.
In the pop/ rock genre they have all the traditionally band members like;
Drummer, guitar, singer, etc.

4. In the pop/rock genre the clothing they wear don’t tend to be high fashion or
anything known really.
But on the other hand they don’t wear completely random clothing.
In pop/rock videos the artists tend to wear demin jeans and jackets.
Although other conventions do use costume as a very key part of the music
videos, in pop/rock they don’t tend to wear strange or popular clothing.
In pop/ rock what they try to send out when creating a music video is a
bunch of people just showing there talents are they have nothing to hide.
The create the image of ‘natural’ talent.
Mise en scene
5. In this shot we can see the main singer just wearing a simple demin jacket
and he has his head down whilst singing.
This shot is significant in pop/rock because they don’t have anything to
distract the audience, it is plain and simple. They are talented.

6. Another convention of pop/rock is lighting. In other genres they tend to
edit the lighting. (In rock they make is darker, in pop they make it light).
In pop/rock they again stick to the idea of ‘natural’. When the band/ artists
are performing in a music video they have the people playing their
instruments and singing in a place where their is natural lighting.
This again is sending out the image that the band is ‘naturally’ talented.
Lighting
In this shot we can see the
band member just standing
their standing next to a
window, no extra lights or
anything.
7. The setting of a music video in the pop/ rock genre tend to be set in a
studio or house because they are creating the image that they are all their
just chilling and playing their instruments.
Unlike other genres they don’t move around to different setting they tend
to stay in the house of studio.

8. The star image is very important in this genre. A stereotypical view is
that the artists is the star image when the performance is happening, but
they tend to have actors when the narrative is occurring in the music
video.
In pop/rock they have the artists in both the preforming and Narrative
bit.
Since the artists are in both selection it shows us how important the star
image is to the pop/ rock convention.

9. Star image
In these shots we can the artist playing parts in both narrative and
performance.
To conclude the star image is a very key aspect in this music genre.
10. In pop/ rock the balance between narrative and performance seem to be
even. But of course depending on the tone and mood of the song this can
slightly change.
I believe in Room 94’s Chasing the summer video they have an equal base
of both narrative and performance.
