The FlexGard system consists of specially-formulated polymer-modified asphalt placed into a high
performance mix design developed by Axeon Specialty Products and Rutgers University. This combination
results in a product that can be placed as a thin overlay (¾”– 1” thick). The FlexGard polymer-modified
asphalt formulation can be tailored to provide excellent performance in a wide variety of applications –
from a low volume rural road to the streets of Manhattan to a heavily-traveled Interstate highway.
The FlexGard mix is designed to optimize asphalt content, thereby utilizing the properties of the FlexGard
polymer-modified liquid asphalt to maximize resistance to both rutting and cracking. Laboratory data
indicates a 1” thick FlexGard overlay will out-perform a 1 ½” thick conventional mix. A ¾” or 1” thick
FlexGard overlay may reduce or eliminate the need for milling and utility adjustments, adding to its cost-
effectiveness.
With the majority of all paved roads and streets in the United States surfaced with asphalt, it
makes sense to choose a product that is strong, durable and backed by the largest asphalt
refiner on the East Coast. It makes sense to choose FlexGard.
The FlexGard mix is designed to be relatively high in binder content (> 7% asphalt content),
providing an increased resistance to aging and fatigue cracking. This also allows for easier field
compaction and low air voids in the finished mat. Despite its high binder content, test results show
greater rut resistance than conventional mix due to the special polymer modified binder used in
the system.

FlexGard = Flexibility + Durability
FlexGard provides a relatively thin (3/4” – 1 ¼”) HMA
pavement that out-performs the conventional 1 ½“ mill
& fill construction. It does not require milling to install.
Intended for use in medium-to long-term maintenance
of road networks, FlexGard requires minimal
adjustments to existing infrastructure such as curbs and
utilities.
To ensure its success, the FlexGard system includes:
• a pavement design by a pre-qualified engineer,
• a special mix design and asphalt binder, and
• requirements for quality acceptance.
What’s more, the FlexGard mix can be produced
locally using available aggregates and contractors!
