This document provides information about grant opportunities for the transport sector through the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF). CEF provides funding for studies, works, innovation/technology, and other transport infrastructure projects across Europe. Funding amounts range from 20-50% depending on the type of project. The application process involves aligning projects with CEF criteria and goals, developing consortiums, and obtaining necessary approvals. PNO Consultants has assisted over 30 successful CEF projects and can help applicants with all stages of the application and implementation process.
2. WHAT IS CEF TRANSPORT?
CEF FOR TRANSPORT
is the EU funding instrument to realise European
transport infrastructure policy. It aims at
supporting investments in building new transport
infrastructure in Europe or rehabilitation and
upgrading the existing infrastructure (through)
the realization of a uniform transport
network across 9 corridors focussing on
all transport modes
3. HOW CAN YOU BENEFIT FROM CEF? (1)
• STUDIES PREPARING FOR IMPLEMENTATION, like environmental impact assessments, permit procedures, societal
cost/benefit analysis, business case development
• STUDIES INCLUDING PILOT DEPLOYMENT: first full scale demonstration of new technology
You can get 50% funding for ‘STUDIES’
For example:
• study activities towards the use of e.g. electricity, hydrogen, biofuels for road transport
• testing of innovative systems for ballast water exchange
• piloting of innovative urban mobility concepts
• demonstration of collaborative cargo bundling projects (non-road)
STUDIES
4. HOW CAN YOU BENEFIT FROM CEF? (2)
For ‘WORKS’ CEF offers 20 to 40% funding
• INVESTMENT PROJECTS IN INFRASTRUCTURE
• FULL SCALE IMPLEMENTATION OF INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY
For example:
• collaborative efficiency investments in port infra and short sea shipping routes
• ‘last mile’ investments in infra for all modalities (rail, road, air, iww) as well as distribution infra for alternative fuels
• implementation of intelligent technologies to provide accessible and comprehensive traffic management information (ITS)
• implementation of SESAR and ERTMS
WORKS
5. BUDGET AND OPPORTUNITIES (FOR ANNUAL PROGRAMME)
€ 110 million for projects on the
core and comprehensive networks
€ 40 million for projects to connect
with neighbouring countries
€ 20 million for freight
transport services
€ 20 million for (reducing)
rail freight noise
Some examples of opportunities per programme
• reduce rail freight noise by retrofitting freight wagons with
composite brake blocks
• stimulate deployment of innovative, efficient and sustainable freight
transport services on both Core and Comprehensive Network
sections
• promote innovative solutions for last mile operations and joint cargo
bundling services
• improving cross border sections for rail, road and inland waterways
• strengthen cooperation with neighbouring countries to ensure
connections and interoperability between infrastructure networks
6. € 80 million for innovation
and new technologies
€ 120 million for intelligent
transport systems
€ 40 million for
motorways of the sea
€ 40 million for nodes
of the core network
Some examples of opportunities per programme
• investments and innovations to make ‘first mile’ and ‘last mile’
transport more efficient for passengers and freight
• reduce overall environmental impact from maritime transportation
• integrate MoS better in trade and logistic chains
• technologies reducing CO2 and Nox emissions
• efficiency improvements in ports
• deployment of sustainable and efficient transport system
• promote decarbonisation of all transport modes along the core
network corridors
• implementation of SESAR and ERTMS
• ITS for enhancing road safety for both passengers and freight and
reducing carbon emissions of the transport system
