2. Waste Water Recycling
• Wastewater created because of household, Industrial or
commercial usage needs to be treated before disposal. If not
treated, toxic substances find their way into groundwater,
lakes and rivers and pollute them, causing grave harm to the
environment.
• Also, rather than just wasting this waste water, it can be re-
used if properly treated, thus saving substantial amounts of
freshwater, which is getting scarcer. Treated waste water can
be utilized for gardening, flushing, farming.

5. Why Is UV Disinfection Required?
• Wastewater has a very high concentration of disease causing
pathogens.
• Typical tertiary treated wastewater samples (before
disinfection) on average contain coliform counts of more than
1 million colony forming units per 100 ml of the sample. These
cannot be seen with naked eyes.
• Wastewater used for gardening and flushing also requires
disinfection due to the high possibility of human contact.
6. Why Is UV Disinfection Required?
• The United States and many other countries have stringent
standards requiring these coliform/fecal coliform counts to be
less than 2.3/100ml
• Unfortunately, India currently has no specific standard for
bacterial/coliform counts for wastewater reuse applications
(only discharge standard exist). Most users/ consultants
therefore follow well established USEPA standards for reuse.

• The UV treatment process is an extremely rapid physical
process, that causes a molecular rearrangement of the
genetic material, known as DNA, of the microorganism which
renders it inactive and incapable of causing infection

• DNA is the main constituent of all chromosomes of all
organisms, known as deoxyribonucleic acid, and is self
replicating.
• Once microorganisms are exposed to UV light they are
rendered inactive and can no longer replicate – meaning they
can no longer produce colonies or cause infection.
• Due to individual cell makeup, different microorganisms
require different levels of UV energy for their destruction, this
energy level is known as dosage.

• Ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) is a disinfection
method that uses 254 nanometer ultraviolet (UV) light to kill
microorganisms.
• It is effective in destroying the nucleic acids in these
organisms so that their DNA is disrupted, leaving them unable
to perform vital cellular functions.
