Importance of Insurance for Exotic Pets
Australians are pet lovers, as evidenced by the fact that pet insurance is one of the most popular
products in the insurance industry. Cats and the dogs are the most popular pets Down Under but
exotic pets are also becoming more popular among animal lovers. In this case, exotic pet insurance is
a must.
What are exotic pets in the first place? These are not your usual cats and dogs, which most pet
owners have basic knowledge in grooming, training, and keeping good health. Instead, these are
pets that are not normally considered as household pets because of their nature (i.e., usually used as
livestock).
The bottom line: Exotic Pet Insurancerequires unique methods and skills in successful care. Your
knowledge in pet care as it applies to cats and dogs are most likely inapplicable to exotic household
pets.
Exotic pets include chameleons, ferrets, chinchillas, geckos, guinea pigs, gerbils, hamsters, mice, rats,
hedgehogs, opossums, lizards, iguanas, potbellied pigs, sugar gliders, snakes, and turtles, to name a
few. If you have one or two of these exotic pets, you are well advised to secure exotic pet insurance
for your own protection.
Why the specific pet insurance instead of the usual animal insurance? Keep in mind that the physical
and mental characteristics of exotic pets are considerably different than their conventional
counterparts (i.e., cats and dogs).
For one thing, these exotic pets are kept more for their monetary value – a prized possession, if you
will – than for their emotional value, which is true for cats and dogs. For example, many species of
snakes can sell for thousands of dollars, thus, the owners’ decision to keep them as pets, at least on
a temporary basis.
For another thing, these animals will require distinct veterinary services than those provided to
canines and felines. The terms and conditions of exotic pet insurance plans will reflect such unique
demands in case of illnesses, injuries and replacements. Yes, the insurance plan can include the costs
of replacing the insured animal although it must be said that pet owners must look at the fine print.
Keep in mind that the insurance coverage for cats and dogs are the standard covers. If you have
exotic pets covered by the usual insurance terms, you cannot expect the insurance company to
provide its services in the usual way in case of illnesses, injuries and loss of said animals. Why?
Because the contract does not include specific coverage for exotic pets!
When it comes to exotic pet insurance, the best service provider is PetPlan. This is the pioneer
insurance company for Transit Insurancecat and dog insurance Down Under but it has expanded to
exotic pets under the PetPlan Livestock insurance package. Name your exotic pet and PetPlan can
have it covered.
