The term dissemination is simple to understand, but sometimes you may find a gap between
what it means and what you can achieve by using/doing it in practice.
So, the big issue here is to know what can or should you do to perform the best dissemination
strategy when you reach to the point of showing and explaining to your audience what is the
project main purpose and how will it benefit the community in general.
You need to be ready to answer some questions that will help you along the way, so you have
to understand and explain perfectly:
1. The main purpose of your project dissemination | WHY?
You may consider three different ways of dissemination, depending on your project
needs and objectives: raising awareness (help you build your identity and profile),
deepen understanding (when you believe that an audience will benefit directly from
your project), and lead to action (when your audience has the chance to experience
your project products, materials and so on).
2. The key message(s) | WHAT WILL BE DISSEMINATED?
The key messages you will define for your project are crucial tools for your
communication to flow in the right direction. You must define your messages in a
simple, clear and easy way for the target audience to understand.
3. The audience | WHOM?
You need to address the right message to the right audience. Whom do you want to
reach? Defining your message(s) will help you find the target audience that will best
suit your interests.
4. The method you will use | HOW?
You may then choose which method or methods you will use for your project
dissemination whether with a blog, a press release, a conference presentation our any
other means of tools that you may find suitable for your audience.
5. When to disseminate | TIMING?
At this point you should focus on the different actions/methods chosen on point 4, and
start thinking about the timing you will need to perform those methods. Here is when
you reach the point where you need to decide “when” and “how” the dissemination
activities can or will be most relevant, and once again, always taking in consideration
your project objectives and methods. If you think to disseminate information at the
beginning of the project, than you should focus on awareness but if you prefer to
disseminate only at the end of the project you must consider focusing on the
accomplishments and deliverables.
