3. The Main Image:
The main image of the poster is Tilda
Swinton herself, as she is a main
character in the film, the magazine is
being used to promote her and her
role in the film.
The layout of the magazine is
interesting as she is the central image
and the ‘W’ is to the side of her face,
however this is typical of the magazine
as the ‘W’ always appears on the left
hand side.
There are three main colours within
the magazines cover, black, white and
a pinky/red, these colours match what
Tilda is wearing as she is pale with
black clothing and the only colour she
has is red on her lips.
The magazine is usually a fashion
magazine, however they are using the
Unique Selling Point (USP) that is Tilda
in order to promote the film and their
magazine.
4. The Masthead:
‘W magazine’ does not stick to
one colour scheme for all their
covers, so as this ‘W’ is black it
could have a link to the narrative
of that film as there is a dark link
throughout it.
The masthead for this cover is ‘W’ as that is the name of the magazine.
The ‘W’ is in a serif font which has been made unique to the particular magazine. As it
is slanted it fits in with the corner of the cover and so allows there to be more space at
the top for the actress.
The terms of layout, the Masthead comes at the top of the magazine, and this is so that
when it is stacked on a shelf, the top of the magazine can still be seen by the reader
and it will be easily recognised.
5. The Lead Article:
The lead article of the magazine is
the interview with Tilda Swinton.
The magazine plays on the release of
her new film and therefore has asked
her to model for them too so she can
be the main image of the cover.
The name of the film isn’t mentioned
on the cover, it is only referred to as
Tilda’s ‘most controversial role yet’
which shows that for this genre of
magazine, they focus more on the
characters and actors within films
than the actual film itself.
The lead article is placed low down
on the page near the bottom, this is
because the font colour has been
picked as black and it fits in perfectly
with the outline of her jacket and
trousers.
6. The Flash:
Flashes are used to promote other
articles within the magazine.
‘W’ magazine has four flashes on
the front cover such as:
- ‘sexy suits for day and play’
- ‘ best looks from the runway to
the street’
- ‘sparkly shoes snakeskin bags
bold jewelry’
- ‘exclusive preview fall fashion
hits’
As this is a fashion magazine, all the flashes have links to fashion items
and how to dress in a different way. The fact that the magazine used
Tilda Swinton on the front cover and then used fashion flashes, shows
that they were using her as a unique selling point to promote the film
and make you buy their magazine.
7. The Image:
The main image of the poster is off the main actress
within the film: Tilda Swinton.
She is positioned in the middle of the magazine and
is a central image, this is because she is the unique
selling point of the film and a reader would
recognise her and then continue to buy the
magazine.
Her dress and colour scheme matches the rest of
the magazines layout as she is only wearing black
and white with red lips. The fact that her lips are red
could signify the blood motif that runs throughout
the film as her son becomes a killer. Her face is
extremely pale and even gives off the idea that it is
white. This again links in with the film as she looks
quite ghost-like and after all the horror she
experiences, this isn’t surprising.
As her body positioning is quite open it shows off
the clothes she is wearing which again links in with
the fact that she is on the front cover of a fashion
magazine.
8. The Cover Line:
The cover line for this magazine cover is the
exclusive preview of ‘Fall Fashion Hits’.
As ‘W’ magazine is based on fashion, it is using
the film in order to be a unique selling point.
However, by making the fashion aspect of the
magazine still come up in the second biggest
font after the Masthead, this would appeal to
their normal audience as well as bringing in film
lovers who like Tilda Swinton as an actress.
9. The Anchorage:
The anchorage here is used to help explain why the actress is featured on
their magazine.
As it is placed above the name of the actress it is easily read by the
audience and they will understand what the article will be about.
As Tilda’s role is described as ‘controversial’ it could make a link to the
narrative as ‘We Need To Talk About Kevin’ is an extremely controversial
film as it is about a mother who never makes a bond with her child which
then leads to the child completely a mass murder.
