2. Introduction
Allen Carr’s stop smoking book has helped many
people quit smoking even though some people
who read it claimed not to have had much
success with it. The success to failure ratio is
over 50% however.
Over 10 million books sold in 57 countries in
more than 38 languages, Allen Carr wrote the
book after his own 100-cigarette-a-day habit
nearly drove him to the depths of despondency.
He devised a plan to quit smoking and this plan
is what he named The Easy Way to Stop
Smoking.
3. Inside the Book
While I don’t agree that there is an easy way to
quit any form of addiction, I would like to say
the book has led millions to smoking cessation
without any nervous and depressed feeling.
This is because Carr helps tobacco addicts
realize the mental reasons behind their craving,
specifically details how to control the withdrawal
symptoms, teaches them how to avoid
instances when temptation might become too
strong, and assists them to stay smoke-free.
4. Inside the Book(2)
Fearlessly, Carr delves into issues such as
nicotine addiction; dispels the social myths that
fan the embers of smoking; the false belief that
a cigarette relieves stress; the role boredom
plays in destroying efforts to stop; and the main
reasons for failure. A smoker who religiously
follows the recommendation of this book will no
doubt throw his or her cigarette sticks away for
good.
5. Inside the Book(3)
Like I earlier mentioned, about the first three
quarters of the book is spent blowing up various
myths and delusions about smoking (such as
smoking relaxing you or getting rid of stress),
which sets you up and gets you into the right
frame of mind for actually quitting. At this point,
the book wants you to continue smoking while
you read it. In a nutshell, the easy way to stop
smoking comprises two things: one, resolving
never to smoke again, and two, not brooding
about it anymore, celebrating instead.
6. Inside the Book(4)
Even though it sounds too simple, this approach
will make more meaning to you after reading
the first part of the book.
Finally, the book mentions two main reasons why
you will fail: the pressure of other smokers, and
having a bad day. Having been around for 20
some years and being able to refine it with
twenty years of feedback, I feel like this is one
of the better books out there on non-smoking.
7. Testimonies from Celebrity Smokers Who
Quit After Reading Allen Carr’s Book
“The Allen Carr Easy Way to Stop Smoking
Program achieved for me a thing that I thought
was not possible – to give up a thirty year
smoking habit literally overnight. It was nothing
short of a miracle.” – Anjelica Huston
“It was such a revelation that instantly I was freed
from my addiction.”- Sir Anthony Hopkins
8. Testimonies from Celebrity Smokers Who
Quit After Reading Allen Carr’s Book(2)
“Everyone who reads this books quits, and I quit
too…”- Ellen Degeneres
“His method is absolutely unique, removing the
dependence on cigarettes, while you are
actually smoking. I’m pleased to say it has
worked for many of my friends and my staff.”-
Richard Branson
9. Disadvantages of Allen Carr’s Stop
Smoking Book
Even though the book has helped many smokers
to quit,it fails in one respect.According to a
smoker who read the book,” We smoke
because of the stress. He does not address the
underlying cause AT ALL and just tries to scare
us. No go … doesn’t work.”
The bone of contention of this particular reader
was that the book failed to address the causes
of stress and how to relieve stress without
smoking since most people smoke because of
stress.
10. About the Author
According to Wikipedia, Carr was born in London
and “started smoking while doing National
Service aged 18. He qualified as an accountant
in 1958. Carr finally quit smoking on 15 July
1983, aged 48, after a visit to a hypnotherapist.
However, Carr claimed that it wasn’t the
hypnotherapy itself that enabled him to quit – “I
succeeded in spite of and not because of that
visit” and “I lit up the moment I left the clinic and
made my way home…”.
11. About the Author(2)
There were two key pieces of information that
enabled Allen to quit later that day. First, the
hypnotherapist told him smoking was “just
nicotine addiction” which Allen had never
perceived before that moment i.e. that he was
an addict. Second his son John lent him a
medical handbook which explained that the
physical withdrawal from nicotine is just like an
“empty, insecure feeling”
12. About the Author(3)
(“Packing it in the Easy Way” pp. 110–116,
Penguin, 2005). He claims that these two
realizations crystallized in his mind just how
easy it was to stop and so then enabled him to
follow an overwhelming desire to explain his
method to as many smokers as possible.”
