5 Kinds Of Piles Treatments That You Can Easily Find At Your Local Pharmacy
1. There are different kinds of creams, ointments and
suppositories for piles that you can easily purchase as
over-the-counter medicines from your pharmacy.
However, you must note that these treatments only
relieve your symptoms; they won't cure piles.
2. The primary aim of these creams, ointments and
suppositories is to soothe and relieve symptoms, and
there are several types of these medicines that are
available in your local drug store. They all contain different
ingredients, which act via different means to lessen your
pile symptoms:
3. 1-Local anesthetics, such as lignocaine and bivucaine that
relieve painful sensations by numbing the bum area.
4. 2-Local anesthetics and astringents such as Germoloids
cream, ointment and suppositories. Hemocaine cream is
another good example of this group of treatments. These
agents act by relieving inflammation and numbing the
area to relieve pain and swelling.
5. 3-Corticosteroids and astringents such as Anusol HC
Plus, Anusol HC ointment, and suppositories act by
reducing inflammation and swelling in the anal area.
6. 4-Corticosteroids and local anesthetics act by both
numbing the area to give pain relief and they also reduce
inflammation. Most of the medicines in this category will
require prescription to purchase, but there are some over-
the-counter brands like Germoloids HC spray that are
readily available.
7. 5-You can also take painkillers such as paracetamol to help
relieve any pain you get from your piles. However, you
should not take painkillers containing opioid analgesics
such as codeine because they can cause constipation. Also,
non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like
feldene and ibrufen aren't suitable for you if you are
experiencing bleeding hemorrhoids.
8. Always read the patient information leaflet that comes
with your medicine, and if you have any questions, ask
your doctor or pharmacist for advice.
9. Medicines containing corticosteroids and other types of
steroids should only be used for a maximum of seven
days. If they are used for longer periods, your skin may
become sensitive to them leading to the thinning of your
skin and to the development of skin ulcers. Also,
prolonged exposure of your skin to steroids could lead to
chronic inflammation of the skin; a condition known
medically as dermatitis.
10. If you visit your GP, make sure you tell him or her if you're
taking any other over-the-counter medicines.
11. If you're pregnant, use only mild medicines that contain
astringents and lubricants and don't take medicines
containing local anesthetics or corticosteroids because if
they are absorbed into the blood, they could cause
harmful effects on you and your unborn baby.
12. It's important to remember that all these medicines are
only for the short-term relief of symptoms and they do not
actually cure your piles. If you really want to be
permanently free from the symptoms of hemorrhoids, you
must change your diet to make your bowel movements
softer, bulkier and more regular.
