BIOLOGY OUTING 29/April/2011
The biology and geology students of 4th A go on an excursion the last Friday,
we started it at a quarter past eight in the morning in the IES Pedro de Luna.
First, our teacher Fernando took us to the Asalto street to show us the wall
located there, it was made of stones that were made of sand from the river.
Furthermore, he explained us that many years ago Zaragoza was called the
five rivers city because Alagón was part of the city and the river Jalón crossed
it. He also told us the types of trees located there. There were London
planetrees (plataneros), Cottonwoods (álmos), Olive trees (olivos), Babylon
willows (sauces llorones), Chinese plums (ciruelos chinos), etc.
Crossing the street we arrived to the Bruil park. In it we saw some bird
species such as…
The eurasian collared dove (tórtola turca) which has a
thin black stain that seems a necklace.
The common wood pigeon (paloma torcaz) with a white stain in
it neck.
The song thrush (zorzal común)
The common magpie (urraca)
Barn Swallow (golondrina)
and some tree species and its characteristic leaves:

European nettle tree (almez)
Walking a bit more
we arrived to the Huerva river. A river is one of the most interesting
ecosystems because in it you can found lots of species, for example:
The mallard (anade real), a type of duck.
Male Female
Common Kingfisher (martín pescador) European Robin (petirrojo)
Rat
Elm (olmo)

Babylon willow (sauce llorón)
Salicylic acid (aspirin) is obtained from it.
Japanese Pittosporum (pitosporo) Tree of heaven (ailanto)
Then we went to the Huerva mouth were we explained our projects to the
rest of our mates and were we read a poster about rivers and water in
Zaragoza and other places.
After that we followed the Ebro brook to have lunch, but before that we saw
some more species:
Grey Heron (garza real) Gull (gaviota)
We learned that matter is
recycled through an ecosystem through cycles. Animals with different
eating habits help to recycle it (carnivores, producers, herbivores,

omnivores, scavengers, and decomposers). Also we learned that plants
have many different techniques to spread their seeds.
We enjoyed a lot this experience and we would like to repeat it.
