This document describes a model for understanding complex human systems called the Butterfly Model. The model depicts a system as having three levels: the deepest individual level involving mental maps and beliefs, the face-to-face interaction level where interpersonal behavior occurs, and the broader social context level. Results are produced at the interface between the external and internal aspects of the whole system and its interdependencies.
