2. Introduction
What is disparities in sentencing?
• The disproportionate charging and, or
convicting civilians because of unjust bias
• Our mission statement is to close the
opportunity divide by taking on the cash bail
system known for economically
oppressing those without the means.
3. Project Summary
With the budget of $1000 we intend seek
those who've been in jail for over 6 months
in the DMV area awaiting trial and bail them
out.
4. Problem Statement
Our issues:
• About two-thirds of the jail population consists of people awaiting
trial (over 450,000 people)
• They use some of the poorest states to test new ways of
implementing bail
• In order to ensure that the person returns to court and proves she
has met the requirements, the judge can require her to purchase a
bail bond
• In some countries, such as England and Canada, making a profit by
posting a defendant’s bail is a crime.
• those who remain detained while awaiting trial were more likely to
go to prison and received longer sentences compared to those who
were released
five out of six of those awaiting trial are there either because they couldn’t
afford bail or because a bail agent declined to post a bond
5. Objectives
• Bail out at least 8-10 people who have been awaiting trial
for over 6 months in jail because they could not afford bail
• Help those bailed out and others released from jail with
resumes and cover letter
• Partner with Lyft to set up transportation for job
interviews
• Partner with alumni to help find housing opportunities
Our objectives address the issues at hand because being in
jail ultimately put one's life on pause. To smoothly transition
from post-jail, we are providing the help and guidance aimed
for longevity.
