due to lack of jobs & opportunities many have moved to Belize
3. Belize
Belize is a english speaking state in Central America
In 1991 there were 12,000 Garifuna speakers according to the
census
It is being replaced by English & English Creol
Hopkins is the only Garifuna village left in Belize
& the young still learn to speak Garifuna
Belize in the Garifuna is called “Ballisi”
4. Honduras
Honduras was the first country in Latin
America where Garifunas settled after
leaving their homeland
70,000 of the people live along the Atlantic
Coast
Garifuna language is now being lost &
shifting to spanish
Honduras in Garifuna is “Indura”
5. Nicaragua
There are few Garifuna
communities in Nicaragua
But they no longer speak
Garifuna
Of the people who do speak
Garifuna 1,500 speak English
Creole & spanish as a second
language
