The North-East has one of the highest poverty rates in the U.K, with the North and South
divide angering the northern people who think the government abandon the North of
England.
In England, the term North–South divide refers to the cultural, economic, and social
differences between:
 Southern England: the South-East and South-West including Greater London and
the East of England
 Northern England: the North-East, Yorkshire and the Humber and the North-West
including Merseyside and Greater Manchester
The status of the Midlands is often disputed; geographically, most areas of the Midlands are
Northern. A grouping of Central England based on UK EU parliamentary constituency
boundaries combines the Midlands and East Anglia.
In political terms, the South, and particularly the South-East (outside Greater London)
and East Anglia is largely centre-right, and supportive of the Conservative Party,
while Northern England (particularly the towns and cities) is generally more supportive of
the Labour Party.
An article in the economist (15th to the 21st of September 2012) argued that the gap
between the north and south in life expectancy, political inclinations and economics trends
was growing to the extent that they were almost separate countries.

2. Although younger generations may be less likely to use speech that is specific to a particular
town, there is still a clear difference between north and south; young Northerners are more
resistant to sounding as if they are Southern than sounding as if they are from a different
Northern town.
The division is sometimes used for comedy, but has its serious side as well. The London
media are sometimes claimed to look down upon those with northern English accents. For
example, Ken Livingstone (a Londoner) suggested that the press's unsympathetic treatment
of John Prescott was partly because he is one to "speak like ordinary people".
The North–South divide is not an exact line, but one that can involve many stereotypes,
presumptions and other impressions of the surrounding region relative to other regions.
The existence of the North–South divide is fiercely contested. Some sources claimthat not
only does it exist, but that it is expanding. For example, a Cambridge Econometrics report of
March 2006 found that economic growth above the UK average was occurring only in the
South and South-East England, whilst North-East England showed the slowest growth. The
same data has been interpreted otherwise to indicate only a very small difference.[4] Indeed,
results are highly dependent on the categories chosen for evaluation. As a generalisation,
the following tend to indicate that there is some sort of north-south divide:
 Health conditions, which are generally seen as being worse in the north, though
spending on health care is higher.
 House prices, which are higher in the south, particularly the south-east.
 Average earnings, which are significantly higher in the south and east.
 Government expenditure, which is higher relative to tax revenues in the North, but
higher in key areas such as infrastructure investment in the South.
 Political influence.

Hendon
Hendon is an eastern area of the City of Sunderland in North East of England the location of
much heavy industry and Victorian terraces and high-rise residential tower blocks.
Shipbuilding in Sunderland began in Hendon with the opening of a shipyard by Thomas
Menvill in 1346.
The old east end of Sunderland was home to Sunderland Barracks until the 1930s. They
were located on the south side near the south docks, near present-day Warren Court
(formerly known as Warren Street). The first aluminum bascule bridge in the world, spanned
the junction of Hendon and Hudson Docks. It suffered from bimetallic corrosion and was
demolished in 1977.
The Victoria Hall Disaster occurred in the area on 16 June 1883 when 183 children died
during a crush in a theatre, while running down the stairs in search of free toys. It remains
the worst stampede disaster in British history.
The area was home to Sunderland AFC’ s first ground, The Blue House Field. The club was
founded at the nearby Hendon Board School in 1879 by James Allen. Partly on its site now is
the Raich Carter Sports Centre, named after an England international footballer who was
born in the area.
Hendon contains the primary schools of Hudson Road and Valley Road. It is home to many
shops along Villette Road such as Gregg's. Some main roads in Hendon are Villette Road,
Commercial Road, Hendon Road, Gray Road, Mowbray Road and Hendon Valley Road. The
"long streets" in Hendon (Cairo Street, Hastings Street, Canon Cockin Street, St Leonard's
Street, Percy Terrace and Hunter Terrace) are very long, consisting of rows of Terraced
Houses and even stretching into a new area: Grangetown.
Ford
Ford Estate (known as Ford locally) is a suburb in south of Sunderland. The suburb is divided
into two areas: High Ford borders the estate of Pennywell. Low Ford, to the east, borders
the suburb of Pallion. Much like the neighboring estate of Pennywell, Ford Estate is
currently undergoing large levels of urban regeneration with private housing now standing
in the place of the homes people were forced out of unwillingly.
At the heart of the area once stood Ford Hall (after which the area is named), the childhood
home of General Havelock, and a road is named after him near the site as well as a few
public houses outside the suburb. The house was demolished in the middle of the twentieth
century and was rebuilt as a retirement home.

4. Most of the houses in Ford Estate were built in the 1930s and 1940s,[1] and most of the
street names begin with the letter F, and also contain the word ford in them, examples of
this are Falmouth Road, Fordham Road, Ford field Road and Falkland Road.
Residents also have access to the nearby Pallion metro station which is located in Pallion.
Pallion
Pallion is a suburb, civil parish and electoral ward of the City of Sunderland in Tyne and
Wear, England. Most of the buildings in the area were built during the Victorian Era and
consist of large terraced houses built for wealthy shipbuilders, but also smaller one storey
cottages in other areas for local shipyard workers (the shipyard industry has now long
gone).
On the edge of the parish (on the bank of the River Wear) once stood Pallion Hall, the
childhood home of Sir Joseph San, developer of the lightbulb. The house was demolished in
1901. Near this part of the area is a retail park, Pallion metro station and an industrial
estate.
Pallion was also the home of the infamous New Monkey club, which had shaped rave
culture in the North East. The club was shut down in 2006 after a drugs raid where there
were 18 arrests. 165 officers stormed the club, and later the club was forced to shut down.
The electoral ward of Pallion was a safe seat for the Labour party from its creation in the
1970s until early 2018, when it was won by Liberal Democrat campaigner Martin Haswell.
