1. QS262 Introduction To Queer Studies
Answers:
Since the beginning of the formation of society, it has always followed a structured set of
rules and regulations that has said the mindset of people living in the society. About gender
sexuality race and class there have been many discriminations that I have seen while
growing up. I have been taught since my childhood that the discrimination between
genders. Males are supposed to be more dominant whereas females are supposed to be
more submissive. For guys, it is OK to do a lot of things and for girls, it is always restrictions
that needed to be followed. It is always been taught that for a girl there are certain
limitations whereas is for the boys there are no limitations whatsoever. Racial
discrimination has also been a part of the societal structure for a very long time now. People
have been discriminated against on the basis of race and culture and history is the witness
of all the situations that have taken place due to this simulation. Hence I myself being a
brown person have a lot of issues regarding my race.
Another thing is the sexuality that is embedded in the mindset of people that people have to
be straight a girl can only like a boy and a boy can only like a girl. However, there can be
differences as well such as a boy can like a boy and a girl can like a girl. Homosexuality is
still not accepted by a lot of people with open arms. The people who are homosexual also
have a very negative notion about them as well. Discrimination on the basis of gender and
sexuality has been a rising issue in society lately. Not only that but also judging people
based on their sexual it is one of the most toxic things that can be done by people. Not only
that but also racial discrimination is equally toxic. For me, it has always been racial
discrimination. Living in a western country and being of a brownish skin tone is a problem.
Because people with fairer skin tones and from Western culture always used to look down
upon us as inferiors. Although we have progressed a lot in society still it has been an issue
till today. I have been always disconnected from the rest of the crowd as I had brown skin.
In school and college and throughout my life I have seen that people with ferric complexions
got more chances than I did and were more acknowledged than I was.
This has always been a constant behavior in many things in my life. This stop to me from
being more outspoken about what I feel and how I feel. Not only that but also it made me
feel that I was not enough. However, that was never the case and my mother always told me
2. that I was more than enough and I was capable of everything and reserved the happiness
that everybody else did. That made me feel good and I got more confidence. However,
society has always supported racial discrimination to some extent whereas on the other
hand my mother always taught me to embrace myself Just The way I am beat my gender
beat my race on my sexuality nothing else m I have also experienced certain things when I
saw that one of my friends who was inclined towards the same sex and he was judged
constantly for his choices.
My mother always told me the only thing that matters is that I should be a kind person and
be humble towards everyone. Hence the gender of a person the sexuality of a person or the
racial upbringing of a person never matters in any way whatsoever. We should always learn
to judge a human b as an individual and why the person that he or she is. A person should
be kind and humble and be caring towards everybody and not just be snobbish and
discriminate against people based on their skin tone or their sexuality.
As the society is progressing times are changing it is a responsibility that we should also
become more considerate towards everybody around us. Sometimes it is important to
define the shackles of society and be what you want to be. The small bits and pieces of
experiences that I have learned from my life have helped me to understand that the
structure of society is never going to let me be what I am and how I am. Hence it is very
important for me to accept myself as I am and love myself just the way it is supposed to be.
Therefore I can be complete in that way and understand the meaning and importance of
self-love.
